Warning: Spoilers Ahead

We have to be honest: We’re not entirely on board with this coaches twist yet. When we heard past winners would be back as mentors, we loved that idea. We didn’t realize they’d spilt this year’s contestants into teams and have them work under these former champions though. We just feel like it’s a bit stifling to the creative process, although we can certainly acknowledge that if a team member is stuck in any way it’s probably a relief to have a “team leader” give them some direction. We’ll reserve judgement until we see more episodes, but for now we’re not loving it.

In last week’s season 8 premiere, creatures created by Rayce, Anthony and Laura in past seasons were the inspiration for the spotlight challenge. They had to come up with a creature inspired by the coaches work, a create that could live in that same world. As always, we think it’s a good group of contestants — some are great fabricators, some are great at conceptualizing and some are great at application and makeup.

The first elimination challenge, for which Darla has immunity, is to come up with 2 creatures who have crash landed on an alien planet. The twist, which we learn at the end of “Return of the Champions,” is that the aliens didn’t land on Earth — they landed on a planet inhabited by primates. So this week’s challenge is to create a character native to that planet.

Now this twist, we love. We like that they’re really changing things up this season and we want to continue seeing the producers of this show take risks. Hopefully the coaches and contestants will be inspired by these challenges. We’re pretty sure we’d just be terrified.

“Monkey Business” episode synopsis, from Syfy:

In this week’s challenge, the contestants must create two original alien creatures, including a primate leader. Make-up artist and Academy Award winner Rick Baker will return as a guest judge.

Face Off airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Syfy.
