TV Goodness Reports: USA Network Cancels Covert Affairs After Five Seasons

Well, I felt in my gut that this was a distinct possibility because of the economics of “older” TV series, and five seasons in, Covert Affairs was a marvelous achievement on basic cable. Fewer and fewer shows get to this point.

When we joined the press call with Chris Gorham back in November, I asked him outright whether they had wrapped up the season in a way that would serve as a series finale. This is what he told us:

“I think where we end up at the end of this season, I hope it’s not the end…we don’t end the season on a cliffhanger in the traditional sense. So, you know, it could be the end. But it’s not the end that I think the audience would be happy with. And, you know, it’s certainly not how we would want to wrap up these characters’ stories.”

Today, USA decided their story is over.

While it makes me sad that we will not see where these characters go from here, I am at peace with where we leave them. As I said in my recap of “Gold Soundz,” I feel like everybody has a relative peace in front of them. Nobody’s life is hanging in the balance. All roads lead wherever these characters choose to take them. I am so grateful we got to accompany them for 75 hours, and I will miss them.

You can catch up on all of our Covert Affairs coverage here. Thank you for reading us. Season five is available online at USA’s website.

P.S. If someone manages a Hail Mary pickup of a movie, or short sixth season, I’ll report it here.
