Confession: It’s been a while since I’ve written about Castle and this is my first one of the season. Thankfully, I’m pretty sure it won’t be my only and last one for the season. Season 7 has been interesting and I can’t wait to see what storylines, twists and turns the rest of the episodes this season have in store. It’s hard for some people to get used to the direction that David Amann is taking, but if Andrew Marlowe has confidence in him, then I feel we should give him a chance to prove what kind of writer and storyteller he is.

Seeing as this is the half way point, I wasn’t sure how this year’s themed holiday episode would compare to last year. I knew what to expect in the episode, seeing as I had read some comments and spoilers from our new show runner. Still, the episode managed to surprise me in a few ways, including the cliffhanger ending — which David had alluded to previously.

I knew that this would be a different type of themed episode. I also knew that we would have a cliffhanger of sorts before our customary winter hiatus, but honestly, the ending still has me wondering where the story will go. Not only as far as Castle and Caskett are concerned, but Esplaine as well.

It’s difficult to narrow down what I loved this week, but I will say it isn’t so difficult to narrow down what I didn’t like:

  • Castle being “kicked out” of the precinct. I am still in shock over this piece of news. I know the preview showed Castle being a private investigator, but I still wonder how it will all work. Also, what will Beckett’s reaction be? I understand why Castle didn’t say anything. He didn’t want to make the moments between them bittersweet, so he kept his mouth shut. I think it was considerate and sweet, actually.
  • Esplainie. They pretended to be engaged for her parents. It was nice to finally meet her parents, even if it was briefly. The sad part was when they admitted they cared for each other, just not as an honest-to-goodness couple. Maybe something will change and it isn’t the end of this pairing. I always hope there will be more to their storyline. I guess we will see…

The last few minutes of the show is what got to me overall. I think the episode deserves a re-watch just for that reason, but any reason for a re-watch is fine with me. Actually, I don’t even need a reason.

Castle returns Monday, January 12th at 10/9c on ABC.
