Warning: Spoilers Ahead

I had the chance to talk to Sean Pertwee last month at NYCC during a Gotham roundtable. If you’re at all familiar with the Nolan trilogy or the Batman films that came before, you know Sean Pertwee‘s take on Alfred is different from anything we’ve seen before. Obviously he’s younger, but we’re also seeing an Alfred who feels partly culpable for the death of the Waynes. He’s now the only person in Bruce’s life who is a constant and the only one — besides Jim Gordon — that truly cares for him.

Sean tells us about the audition process, how he and EP Bruno Heller developed this take on his character and what role Alfred is to play in young Bruce’s life.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8/7c on FOX.
