Warning: Spoilers Ahead

For a show like this, it’s so important to get the look and feel of it just right. The city of Gotham is very much a character in this story and has its own color unique palette. At the Gotham roundtable at NYCC last month EP/Director Danny Cannon told us about the process of getting to that moody, gritty place. Although we don’t really know the time period — only that it’s 20 years before the Batman movies — he wanted it to feel like New York in the late 1970s. There was a lot going on culturally and musically and it could be a very dangerous place. So even though we haven’t necessarily seen this version of Gotham before, it feels familiar, it feels like it’s in the Batman universe.

Danny talks about how important it is to get the city’s sense of danger across, how Dickensian London comes into play and how a fairytale element is prevalent throughout.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8/7c on FOX.
