If you’ve read me here or on Twitter (thank you), you know I’m a staunch animal advocate, and one of my mantras is there are no bad animals, only bad owners. Hallmark Channel and the American Humane Association come together Thursday night to honor the powerful bond between dogs and their humans and recognize extraordinary acts of canine heroism in The Hero Dog Awards, a two-hour special.

During a nationwide search, 135 dogs from across the U.S. were nominated and more than 1.5  million votes were cast by the American public, with eight canine finalists selected. The top dogs were celebrated, and one dog was awarded the Hero Award, last month in a ceremony in Los Angeles, which was recorded for broadcast by Hallmark Channel. The special is part of Hallmark Channel’s Pet Project initiative, a cross-platform adoption advocacy campaign designed to celebrate the animals in our lives.

The Hero Dog Awards airs Thursday at 8 pm /7c on Hallmark Channel and features appearances from Hallmark family members Lori Loughlin, Lacey Chabert, and Bailee Madison. James Denton, who’s just been announced as part of the cast of the upcoming Good Witch series, and Beth Stern, host.

The spectacular finalists range from service dogs to law enforcement K-9 officers, to rescue success stories. Here’s a sneak peek of the eight amazing dogs who will be profiled during the special. [Note: Susie, one of the nominees, was the dog whose story was featured in the UP film Susie’s Hope.]
