[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Motive‘s Brendan Penny does double duty Sunday night, preceding his appearance in Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ Along Came a Nanny (which funnily enough shares the same director, Michael Scott) with a very different turn in UP TV’s Heavenly Match, opposite Resurrection‘s Samaire Armstrong.

The (mostly) romantic comedy is based on the novel Heavens to Betsy by Beth Patillo and follows two best friends, who both happen to be ministers, as they balance their personal lives with their occupations on the pulpit and realize they want something more. Definite points to the creative team for doing something a little different. I adore Penny, and I’m happy to see him popping up on TV before Motive returns for a third season (which is still on hold as far as ABC goes, although they are already back in production for CTV).

Here’s what to expect: Casey Hart (Armstrong) comes to a fork in the road in her calling as a minister when her associate pastor position is instantly elevated because another pastor decides to retire. Unsure if she wants to stay, and faced with new feelings for her best friend, David (Penny), her personal and professional goals get a little muddled. On top of that, she’s butting heads with a women’s auxiliary member Gabrielle Rose (who’s also in next weekend’s Wedding Murder Mystery on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) who’s wielding power and prejudice to hide her own jealousy and disappointment.

Look for Single Ladies’ Letoya Luckett, as Casey’s other best friend, Ronnie, familiar faces Bill Dow (When Calls the Heart) and Jody Thompson (Signed, Sealed, Delivered) as senior members of Casey’s congregation, and Gwynyth Walsh (The Color of Rain) as Casey’s mentor, Sarah.

It’s a sweet film that runs a mostly predictable path to a happy ending (no surprise given its network) with a few wistful moments sprinkled here and there. It’s completely family friendly, and it’s not 100% a romantic comedy, despite the title. It’s more about a young woman finding her way in the world, and figuring out who she wants in her life as she walks that path.

Heavenly Match airs Sunday at 7/6c on UP Television, and repeats at 9/8c and 11/10c. Here’s a sneak peek:
