How to Get Away with Murder “Smile, or Go to Jail”

Episode 3 of the Pete Nowalk law school drama, How to Get Away with Murder kicked off with a bang. The law students were in Professor Keating’s office trying to convince Michaela there is no other option but to get rid of the body. Michaela was completely in shock and was not acting like the strong, cutthroat woman we are used to seeing on our screens for the last three weeks. With that being said, this episode focused a lot on Michaela.

We meet Michaela’s fiancé Aiden this week and find out a little bit of his backstory. We learn that he had relations with Connor, and judging by Michaela’s response she just learned that too. Wes sort of fell into the background a little in this episode, until the end. He was awarded the class trophy but he didn’t really uncover anything extraordinary throughout the episode. Wes has been holding onto Lila’s phone that Rebecca left in his apartment for quite some time now; the fact that he only comes forward now is a bit surprising. The fact that he visited Rebecca at the station is a very bold move for him. Pretending to be a lawyer and lying to get access to something doesn’t seem like his cup of tea.

The power player this week is definitely Laurel, she comes up with an alibi for the group when no one can think straight and decides what their next move should be. Laurel suggests they use the school bonfire to their advantage and take pictures and make their rounds at the event. In case anyone finds out about the murder, they can say they were there.

Annalise is on edge towards the end of the episode due to her client fleeing the courtroom with the witness and the two of them sneaking away together. That leads to Wes telling Annalise about the phone and inevitably winds up Rebecca.  Sam Keating reacts in a very odd and interesting way to this information. Perhaps he is hiding the full details about his relationship with student, Lila Stanguard. Annalise has cornered him before on the matter and even searches through his phone for some signs of infidelity. But she finds nothing.

Character Spotlight: Michaela Pratt

She’s in the spotlight in this episode and shows her weak and more vulnerable side. When it comes down to deciding what to do with the body she freezes and doesn’t know what to do. We’re used to her standing out amongst the crowd and this week she did just the opposite. Maybe it was having her fiancé there or the pressure finally getting to her, but Michaela seems to fall way behind in this episode — not at all like the person we’re used to.

Judging by next week’s preview we are definitely in for some shocking and jaw-dropping reveals. I’d love to see more from Asher Millstone and learn more about his character. He’s conceited and stuck up, but he knows what he’s doing.

How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
