Annie’s back, and she’s blonde, and there’s no time to lose as a new case with old ties surfaces. The fifth season of Covert Affairs, premiering tomorrow night on USA, picks up four months after the events of the (fantastic) fourth season finale as Annie arrives back in D.C., ready for duty but hesitant to reveal where she’s been. She’s needed either way, so once she passes a polygraph, it’s off to work she goes.

She lands in Chicago and dives right in, but there are new challenges this time, which there would have to be given everything that she’s survived. We’re also introduced to two new characters who will recur this season–Altan Borz (Michael Goorjian, who’s always going to be one of mine from his days on Life Goes On), the target of the investigation in the premiere, and Ryan McQuaid (Body of Proof‘s Nic Bishop), a player on the private security scene whose ties to the CIA run deep, and are about to get deeper.

It’s a solid hour that moves at a fast clip. Thankfully, the whole gang–Auggie, Holder, Joan, Arthur, and even little Mac, are all along for the ride. We don’t get any insight into Annie’s time away, except to confirm Auggie and Holder’s suspicions that she’s keeping secrets. I just hope we get those out in the open sooner than later, and they’re not left unexplained until the end of this season. I’m so glad they’re back for 16 episodes. Y’all know how much this show means to me, and I love that they’ve made it this far.

Here’s the official logline on season five: The season picks up after Annie fakes her death, alters her identity, and goes deep undercover in the streets of Hong Kong to defeat her most cunning opponent, Henry Wilcox. The new season will examine the price Annie will have to pay for this risky maneuver and the implications it will have on her relationships–both personal and professional–as she attempts to re-emerge into the world she once knew. In addition to Goorjian and Bishop, new cast members this season include a trifecta of kick-ass ladies–Nazneen Contractor (24), Perrey Reeves (Entourage), and Amy Jo Johnson (Flashpoint).
