The Rookie Blue squad rolls out for its fifth season Thursday night on ABC with back-to-back episodes. “Blink” is the true season premiere, airing at 9/8c, and a second episode, “All By Her Selfie,” airs immediately afterward at 10/9c. Set your DVRs accordingly.

“Blink” could have actually been the second hour of the fourth season finale (which frankly left me ragey with Andy’s predictable reaction to Sam’s shooting) as it picks up moments after that episode’s events. Oliver, Chloe, and Sam are still in the hospital. Andy and Dov retreat to a local diner. Traci is leading the investigation at the station with an assist from Chris, and Gail has gone home to get drunk, feel crappy, and make a big change, only to be cheered up by her girlfriend.

The “procedural” aspect of the premiere involves a holdup happening while Andy and Dov try to not be cops for 10 minutes. Unfortunately, it also times out with a crisis for Chloe that Dov misses. Elsewhere at the station, Frank is getting special attention from a senior inspector hell-bent on laying blame for the shooting. And Nick, on the heels of realizing Andy still has feelings for Sam, goes on an errand that proves he’s the bigger boy in the scenario.

In the second episode, there’s a new face on the squad and Andy steps up to be his training officer, only to learn he has ties to management, and she needs to rethink her teaching skills. Chris makes a new friend, Traci sets some ground rules to keep her ex in check, and Oliver reluctantly changes shirts. Dov and Chloe clear the air about her marriage and their own future while Traci gets reassurance from Steve that he’s all in.

The two episodes don’t really bridge as a two-parter, but it works for the programming for us to get a fairly uninterrupted 13 weeks. The only lost leader there is Frank and Noelle–we don’t get closure.

Regardless, I’m glad they’re back. I always forget how much I like this show and the cast until they start up again. I’m amazed, and appreciative, that ABC has given it five seasons. It doesn’t hurt their prospects for continuing on that ION has picked up US syndication rights, as well.
