One of my absolute favorite Canadian imports returns Stateside tomorrow night as ABC launches the second season of Motive in the juggernaut slot behind Modern Family (technically behind Mixology, but whatever). Sweetening the pot this season, the cast welcomes Warren Christie (Alphas) but bid adieu to Roger Cross who’s busy over on Continuum and now, we know, Orphan Black.

Our Canadian friends are wicked far ahead of us–season two kicked off on CTV back in March, but file under better late than never because the second season is terrific, and chock full of guest stars like Jason Dohring, Jennifer Beals, Callum Keith Rennie, Laura Mennell (Alphas), Niall Matter and Eric Cerra from Eureka (although sadly, not in the same episode), Ali Liebert (Bomb Girls and Lost Girl) and Psych‘s Corbin Bernsen.

When season two kicks off, we’re several months past the shooting that closed out season one, and everyone has moved on from that. Changes are still afoot as the division head played by Cross graduates to greener pastures and is replaced by Mark Cross (Christie), with whom Angie (Kristin Lehman) has a complicated history. Their arc will play out across the season. Detective Brian Lucas (Brendan Penny) has his own complications as his marriage gets bumpy and he strikes up a friendship with a young rookie, Officer Sung (Valerie Tian).

Vega (Louis Ferreira) is still Angie’s rock, and their friendship is the throughline as she turns to him with her own doubts on and off the job. Ferreira and Lehman are just so good together. Lauren Holly also returns as M.E. Betty–equal parts flirt and smarts.

Season two begins tomorrow with a case about a suicide that might not be a suicide as TVD‘s Professor Shane (David Alpay) and Silicon Valley‘s Amanda Crew play a married couple who don’t know everything about each other that they should. Here’s the official logline: Detectives Flynn and Vega investigate a suspected suicide victim who may have had some unwelcome help ending his life. Meanwhile, the Metro Police Department homicide team has a new Commander, Sergeant Mark Cross – a charismatic former undercover detective with a mysterious link to Angie’s past.
