Dancing with the Stars “Season 18 Week 9” aka The Semifinals

Um, what happened on DWTS this week? I’m still a little in shock but we will get to that. It came down to five couples.  Each team had two dances and they seemed to be up for the challenge. Also mega choreographer/director Kenny Ortega was the guest judge. And after the Abby situation last week, I like most of America, couldn’t have been happier.

Let’s see how everyone did:

DANCE #1 – PERSONAL ICONS

Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas

Dance: Viennese Waltz

  • In these first dances each celebrity talked about who their personal icons are. Candace’s is bible teacher and author, Angela Thomas. She gave Candace a pep talk. Unfortunately there were a few screw ups in this dance and she didn’t cover it up well. The judges told her she has to keep going and not to show that she has messed up.

Score: 8-Carrie Ann, 9- Len, 9-Kenny, 8-Bruno; Total: 34

Voting number: 800-868-3407

Candace and Mark find out right after their scores that they’re…..SAFE!! I have to say that this is the first shock of the evening. This means they’re in the finals and, frankly, I don’t think they should be. She is a good dancer but compared to the other couples left she has been the most inconsistent.

Amy & Derek and Charlie & Sharna find out where they stood next. Both couples are IN JEOPARDY???? What? I don’t even know what to say at this point. Charlie & Sharna dance first.

Charlie White and Sharna Burgess

Dance:  Foxtrot

  • Charlie’s icon is Scott Hamilton. He says the key to winning this is versatility. This is something Charlie and Sharna have done very well. The foxtrot was amazeballs! (I don’t care if I’m over 30, I’m still using the word!) The judges could not have been more excited about this.

Score: 10-Carrie Ann, 10- Len, 10- Kenny, 10-Bruno; Total: 40

Voting number: 800-868-3412

Dance:  Quickstep

  • Amy’s inspirational person is Oprah. (Whose isn’t?) And she actually called her and Derek during the rehearsals!  (I probably would have passed out) Quickstep is my least favorite dance but this was one of my favorite routines.  As with every other week the word that comes up: Amazing.

Score: 10-Carrie Ann, 9- Len, 10- Kenny, 10-Bruno; Total: 39

Voting number: 800-868-3410

Our last two contestants find out where they stood; Meryl & Maks and James & Peta. One pair is safe and one’s in jeopardy. The couple in jeopardy was Meryl & Maks and James & Peta are safe. All three Olympians and front runners are in jeopardy. What just happened?

James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

  • Michael Jackson is James’ icon and of course he is no longer with us. Instead, record executive and producer, L.A. Reid comes and speaks with James. He says that MJ was always the hardest working and wanted to be the best. How ballsy is it that James and Peta did a Michael Jackson-inspired dance to his new song in front of his last choreographer/director? It pays off.

Score: 10-Carrie Ann, 10- Len, 10- Kenny, 10-Bruno; Total: 40

Voting number: 800-868-3402

Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Dance: Jive

  • Meryl’s icon is of course, Kristi Yamaguchi, gold medalist and Season 6 DWTS champion. She says Olympians can handle the physical, it’s the mental that they are not always prepared for. How great is this Jive?  How sucky would it be if they went home? How crazy did it get when Maks started kissing everyone? They just work well together.

Score: 10-Carrie Ann, 10-Len, 10-Kenny, 10-Bruno; Total: 40

Voting number: 800-868-3406

DANCE #2

Dance: Jazz

  • I’m still not over the fact that she’s safe and in the finals.

Score: 9-Carrie Ann, 10- Len, 10-Kenny, 9-Bruno; Total: 38

Voting number: 800-868-3407

Charlie White and Sharna Burgess

Dance:  Samba

  • I agree with the judges on this. It’s clean and perfect in every way except that it lacks funk and you need that with the Samba.

Score: 9-Carrie Ann, 9- Len, 9- Kenny, 9-Bruno; Total: 36

Voting number: 800-868-3412

Amy Purdy and Derek Hough

Dance:  Jazz

  • There’s one small mess up on Amy’s part but otherwise this is a brilliant dance. Derek is always proving how incredible his choreography is and Kenny Ortega almost makes him cry!  In a good way of course.

Score: 9-Carrie Ann, 10- Len, 10- Kenny, 10-Bruno; Total: 39

Voting number: 800-868-3410

James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd

Dance: Rhumba

  • I love James and Peta but their song distracted me. (“Islands in the Stream” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rodgers) It comes off a little cheesy to me. Did they also have to dress like them? Yes, it’s a clean dance and it’s not the best reason for my judgment but I couldn’t deal. I’m sorry. They were already safe.

Score: 9-Carrie Ann, 9- Len, 9-Kenny, 9-Bruno; Total: 36

Voting number: 800-868-3402

Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Dance: Viennese Waltz

  • It’s perfection and that’s all I need to say.

Score: 10-Carrie Ann, 10-Len, 10-Kenny, 10-Bruno; Total: 40

Voting number: 800-868-3406

The 3 Olympians, in jeopardy: Meryl & Maks, Amy & Derek and Charlie & Sharna. The first couple to be told they’re safe: Amy & Derek.

It comes down to the Ice Dancing partners. One of them has to leave. Meryl & Maks and Charlie & Sharna. This really is an uncomfortable moment.

But Charlie & Sharna are the ones going home and now he gets to cheer on his partner Meryl to win. This is the most insane elimination this season.

Favorite Quotes:

Kenny: “Bring out the champagne!”

Carrie Ann: “You just smash me in the face with brilliant.”

Bruno: “My jaw was dropping on the desk.”

Tom:  “That was lovely and vague at the same time.”

Tom:  “That booing was for you.  That was for you Lenny.”

Tom: “And now they are booing me Len.  So there!”

Len: “No peril Meryl.  That was fantastic.”

Carrie Ann: “Maks, did you just kiss me?”

Carrie Ann: “You turned Maks into something warm and fuzzy.”

Tom: “You went from warm and fuzzy and you now might need shots.”

Erin: “As long as he is not kissing anyone.”

Bruno: “Nasty but tasty.”

Bruno: “Hit that rhythm stick.”

Charlie: “And now everyone thinks I’m crazy.”

Kenny: “From Ken the ten!”

Erin: “Calm down Carrie Ann!”

Next week it’s the Finals! It’s down to 4 couples. I can’t even predict who will win since things have gone a little haywire.  Who do you think deserves the Mirror Ball Trophy for Season 18?

Meryl & Maks

Candace & Mark

James & Peta

Amy & Derek

We will see…..

The Dancing with the Stars finale airs Monday at 8/7c on ABC. The conclusion will be Tuesday at 9/8c.
