Lifetime Television continues its literary streak this weekend with an adaptation (by Haven‘s Shernold Edwards) of Terry McMillian‘s A Day Late and a Dollar Short, about a matriarch who put her dreams on hold to raise her family only to find out that she doesn’t have much time left when her doctor warns her that her next asthma attack will likely be fatal.

Given a short amount of time to wrap things up, Viola Price (Whoopi Goldberg) again puts her fractured family first, seizing the reins to do what she can to right their course, and return them to each other, before she dies. It’s a bumpy road of ugly truths and hard lessons but her heart is in the right place, and her stubborn determination brings everybody back to where they’re supposed to be.

The star-studded supporting cast includes Ving Rhames as Viola’s estranged husband. Cecil, and Mekhi Phifer (House of Lies) , Kimberly Elise (Diary of a Mad Black Woman), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls) and Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris), as their four children.

Everybody does very solid work and they’re completely believable as a family who have gone their separate ways over the decades and are now called on to put their feuds to bed and do as they’re told. Its not an easy watch–when they argue with each other, they go off–but it’s an honest portrait of how families fall apart and come back together.

A Day Late and a Dollar Short airs Saturday night on Lifetime at 8/7c and repeats throughout the month. Here’s a sneak peek:
