WARNING: Spoilers for tonight’s episode of Vikings

Tonight is an all new Vikings and I don’t know about you guys but I have been anxiously waiting for episode five.

How brutal was last week’s crucifixion? Athelstan went through such a horrifying experience. My big question for “Answers in Blood” is how is he going to carry on? In a recent press call with George Blagden, he told us a little bit about what to expect for his character:

“I remember when Michael [Hirst, the Vikings creator] presented me with that script of episode four and said I really think this needs to happen to Athelstan for him to move into the next chapter of his life. And I remember sort of taking the script home and thinking, ‘My gosh…what must it be like to actually go through that emotional and physical act of horrifying torture?’ And obviously it’s not something that in any way I can relate to as a human. I have no idea what it would be like to be nailed to a cross. So talking a lot with our director of the episode — Ken Girotti — about what it actually would — how it would affect your physicality for one having nails driven through your hands and feet and how long it would take to recuperate so without spoiling too much you will see Athelstan as we move into episode five at the lowest point of his existence — both mentally and physically — and how that act that you see carry out in episode four — how that will shape his mind more than anything else and his emotional choices that he makes as we carry on with season two.”

Synopsis for “Answers in Blood”: Lagertha and Ragnar unite once again and together fight to win Kattegat back from Jarl Borg. Aslaug must face the truth of her prophecies. Athelstan struggles to define his faith. Bjorn must once again make a choice.
