With the previews that have been released for Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead, it appears that a good deal of the focus will be on Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Beth (Emily Kinney).  This makes sense given that all of the episodes since the mid-season finale have concentrated on one or two groups of survivors from the prison attack.

The episode seems to continue with Beth’s monologue that we saw in “After” and the diary entries detailing her and Daryl’s struggle for survival after losing the only refuge they have known since the farm was overrun.  However, the tone has become much, much darker.  The optimism of her entries while they were at the prison is gone, with her revealing, “If you don’t have hope, what’s the point of living”.

This last sentence should conjure up memories of Beth’s suicide attempt in Season 2.  Even when she still had the farm, her husband Jimmy, and most of her family still alive, she wanted to die, and she damn near succeeded.  Now, the prison is lost, her father is dead, and for all she knows, her only remaining family, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), is dead too.  Has Beth finally become so hopeless that she will finally follow through with what she started in Season 2?

For those who are also fans of the comic book series, I want to mention that the writers of the TV series love to mix up the comic book characters and give characters the deaths that other characters had.  Example — Tyreese (Chad Coleman) was the one who lost his head at the hands of the Governor in the comics, but Hershel (Scott Wilson) ended up getting that horrific death in the TV series.  Everyone remember Carol in the comic book series?  She, too, was suicidal, and had an unsuccessful suicide attempt before “opting out” by simply walking outside and letting the walkers devour her.  Will Beth get the death that Carol had in the comics?

As for the other characters, we have been given no indication that Sunday’s episode will feature any of them.  But, it wouldn’t surprise me if they did since that has been the pattern in the past few episodes.

What does everyone else think?  Will Beth finally meet the grim reaper?

Episode 4.12 “Still” of The Walking Dead airs Sunday night at 9/8c on AMC.
