Last year, Gospel Music Channel TV rebranded itself as UP (or Uplifting Entertainment) and they’ve thrown a gauntlet into the family-friendly flick fray, premiering original movies throughout the year–many starring the same folks who also regularly pop up in original films over on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel (the more the merrier, I say). I only discovered them on my DISH lineup last fall and it was a pleasant find (they’re also the US distributor for the uber-successful Canadian series, Heartland).

Sunday night, Barry Watson headlines Far From Home, set in the gorgeous San Juan, Washington islands (and filmed in the equally gorgeous British Columbia), about a writer who finds himself back among the quirky residents of his hometown after his long-estranged uncle dies and leaves him an inheritance he didn’t expect and doesn’t want.

Co-starring with Watson are a who’s who of familiar Canadian actors (fun fact: several of them have appeared on Supernatural) including Stefanie von Pfetten (Cracked), Eli Goree (Emily Owens M.D.), Lorne Cardinal (Corner Gas),  Paul McGillion (Once Upon a Time), Venus Terzo (Da Vinci’s Inquest), and Aleks Paunovic (Arctic Air). It’s directed by Michael Scott, who directed Watson’s last movie of the week, A Kiss at Pine Lake, plus a handful of Cedar Cove episodes and other films in regular repeat rotation on Hallmark Channel. New writer Bryar Freed penned the screenplay and we’ll see her work again later this year on UP in Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Far From Home premieres at 7/6 c on Sunday and repeats again at 11/10 c. Here are a few sneak peeks.
