2013 Favorite Daytime Couples: General Hospital’s Dante and Lulu

We’ve been showing primetime actors lots of end-of-the-year love. Now we’re shining a light on daytime. Two of our TV Goodness writers are soap fans so we decided to name our favorite couples of the year. Going first is Melissa.

Dante and Lulu: I was thinking about who would be my favorite daytime couple of 2013. My first thought was Dante and Lulu. Then my fellow blogger asked me a question: “Even without Julie Marie Berman as Lulu?” I think so. Yes, the chemistry with Julie Marie Berman and Dominic Zamprogna was off the charts. Yes, I was sad when Berman decided to leave the show. But Emme Rylan has done a pretty good job at taking over the role and making it her own. Emme and Dominic have great chemistry but it’s just different. And that’s okay. I’m still rooting for this couple and hoping they will figure out that their kid is being disguised as the evil Britt’s kid. What also makes this pairing so interesting is the history these characters have. The fact that Lulu is the daughter of Luke and Laura is amazing in itself. But Dante is the son of Sonny Corinthos, who has a friendship with Luke Spencer and is also the town’s mobster with a heart of gold. That’s what I love about soaps when it is done correctly. They respect the history of the show. We will have to see what 2014 has in store for this couple.

Patrick and Robin: When Robin was “killed” in an explosion Jason Thompson did the best work of his career as a grieving widower. As an audience we knew she was alive and it kind of killed us that we had to watch our guy fall apart. Then he fell in love with Sabrina. I do like this character but in the back of fans’ minds we knew Robin was the one for him. Now Sabrina is pregnant and that sort of makes me a little annoyed but that’s part of the soap opera world. It will be nice to see how 2014 works out for the Drakes. Things are already promising to get bumpy.

Carly and Franco/Todd: First of all Carly has chemistry with everyone! Laura Wright is an amazing actress but when you put her with powerhouse Roger Howarth, it’s a whole other kind of chemistry. It sucked that the character of Todd had to go away because of a dumb lawsuit but the writers came up with a very interesting plan. Let’s make Roger a reformed Franco. I love it and am not sure how they are going to proceed but it should be fun.

So happy new year everyone!  And keep it up General Hospital. Let’s go for 50 more years!
