Daniel Gillies is a talented actor, director and screenwriter although he is currently in the spotlight for his role as Elijah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. This year, the major multi-tasker also played Dr. Joel Goran on the Canadian series, Saving Hope.

Daniel’s portrayal of Elijah is one of a true gentleman who is very correct and proper and he never gives up on his mission to save his hybrid brother Klaus from himself.  Although their end game is the same in trying to regain the kingdom they had in New Orleans, they go about it in very different ways and Elijah’s method is very strategic and calculated whereas Klaus’ is just evil.

On TVD, Elijah has always been in love with Katherine but I think he loves her even more now she is human and his protective side is more to the fore as she cannot look after herself the way she used to. However, on The Originals, what started as a protective feeling towards a pregnant Hayley seems to be turning into a slow burn relationship. I love their chemistry and the looks that pass between them. Elijah will put the baby and his family above all else and is pinning all his hopes on this little one saving Klaus from himself and saving them all as a family. Or what is left of their family.

I think Daniel’s exquisite portrayal of Elijah lends itself to the assumption that the vampire sees himself as the patriarch of the family although Klaus may have something to say about that. Actually, I think he and Klaus are fighting for this position. It will be interesting to see where this takes them and where they all end up eventually.

The Originals returns with new episodes Jan. 14 at 8/7c on the CW.
