Some of you will remember Ian Somerhalder from his brief stint as Boone Carlyle on Lost. However, I have to say he didn’t really stand out for me. When I first started watching The Vampire Diaries, I knew I recognized him from somewhere but had to google him to jog my memory. But now? Now he’s unforgettable.

I think he is great on TVD and his acting skills are really highlighted in the role he plays. As Damon Salvatore, he manages to make us hate him, then love him and then hate him all over again.

Ian brings just the right amount of vulnerability to his character and makes us believe Damon isn’t worthy of anyone’s love so he constantly jeopardizes everything he has (please see the recent Damon/Elena break-up). He does a good job of making us believe he doesn’t care but on the flip side, he also draws us in and makes us believe he does care above everything else. At times, seemingly above a relationship with his brother, but you can see he is torn between what is right and what he really wants.

Ian has this knack for mixing this vulnerability with a good dose of contempt and derision which are manifested in the many facial expressions we have come to know and love.

I will never ever forget the classic bromance that emerged between Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) and Damon. They became great drinking buddies although they pretended they couldn’t stand each other for a lot of the time. The loss Damon felt after Alaric’s death was palpable — the vampire seemed so lost and alone. I think this was a testament to Ian and his pitch perfect acting choices. Because of him, we continually get to witness so many sides to Damon. Some beautiful, some brutal.

Somerhalder continues to give us amazing performance after amazing performance in season five of The Vampire Diaries, which returns with new episodes Thursday, Jan. 23 on the CW.
