Blame Charles Dickens, but it’s a popular idea to set a Christmas movie with a protagonist who has to face his or her past to make peace with the present. Kristin’s Christmas Past is the latest to go down that path, and it’s a solidly charming affair anchored by Shiri Appleby.

Appleby plays Kristin, 34 and happily moored in New York alongside her lifelong BFF Jamie, until he tells her that he’s going home for Christmas Eve–something neither have done since leaving for college–and it leaves her adrift. Thanks to a magical intervention, Kristin gets to go home, too, only it’s 1996 when she wakes up in bed alongside her teenage self and and is given a second opportunity to see her family and her past mistakes and finally learn from them.

Appleby is great as a woman who moves quickly from “what in the hell?” to “just go with it” and becomes a friend to her younger self, informed by all the life the girl hasn’t lived yet. Her parents are played by Judd Nelson and Revolution‘s Elizabeth Mitchell, and the family is rounded out by My So-Called Life‘s A.J. Langer.

Hannah Marks (Necessary Roughness) is Kristin the younger and after an initial freakout, she’s equally easygoing when faced with the news that the woman in her bedroom on Christmas Eve is her, 17 years out. Jamie is played by Will Kemp and my only nit is that we don’t have more of the elder Jamie and Kristin together because Kemp and Appleby are awesome in the opening scenes–I want somebody to put them in another project immediately.

Kristin’s Christmas Past premieres at Saturday night at 8/7c on Lifetime and repeats throughout the month. And if you enjoy it, I recommend checking out Eve’s Christmas when it rolls around again on Hallmark Channel.
