Fall TV Preview 2013: NBC’s Dracula [VIDEO and PHOTOS]

Dracula

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

You had me at Dracula. I will sample every and any show about vampires. Whether or not I stick around depends on a number of things. In this latest incarnation, there is a lot to like. There’s new mythology layered over a history we think we know, a great cast and Budapest stands in for Victorian England beautifully. But most of all I like that this pilot kept surprising me.

Series synopsis:

Jonathan Rhys Meyers will play the title role as the iconic character returns to Victorian England to seek revenge on those who doomed him to immortal hell.

The 10-episode series reintroduces Dracula as he arrives in London, posing as Alexander Grayson, an American entrepreneur who claims that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier. Only one thing can potentially thwart this plan: He becomes fixated with Mina Murray (Jessica De Gouw, Arrow), a young woman who appears to be the reincarnation of his dead wife.

Based on a script by co-executive producer Cole Haddon, Dracula is executive produced by Colin Callender, Tony Krantz, Gareth Neame and Daniel Knauf.

Dracula, The Blood is the Life:

New to England, Alan Grayson hosts a lavish party. He becomes fixated on Mina, a beautiful young woman who looks like his dead former love. Newly engaged to Mina, Harker grapples with worries over providing Mina the life she deserves.

Not Watching at All

I don’t watch anything live, but I’ve seen the pilot and if I’m home on Friday nights I will Watch Live (well, I’ll start it 20 minutes late so I can fast-forward through the commercials). I really like how this isn’t the same old Dracula we’ve come to know and fear (and/or love) over the years. In addition to a new direction for this familiar story, the characters are familiar, but with a twist.

Dracula premieres Friday, October 25 at 10/9c on NBC.
