[WARNING: Spoilers for tonight’s Revenge premiere]

After a shaky season two, Revenge looks to get back on track tonight with its season three premiere called “Fear.”

Synopsis for “Fear”: The summer season kicks off in The Hamptons as Emily Thorne’s course of revenge is renewed and set against an unexpected timeline. Meanwhile the return of Victoria Grayson’s son brings changes and complications to the all-powerful family. And a glimpse into the future shows that the wedding of the century may lead to Emily’s ultimate demise.

Revenge creator Mike Kelley is out as showrunner. Sunil Nayar is in. In fact, he wrote this first episode of the new season. Does Revenge get its groove back? Mostly. There are some really good and juicy moments and, as usual, I love any scene that features the awesome Nolan/Emily friendship as well as the Victoria/Emily rivalry. We get plenty of those moments for sure. The Emily/Victoria scenes are particularly stellar because it shows their relationship in a different light even though you know those two are forever biting back their hatred of each other. It’s really interesting and it works for me.

I love the introduction of Victoria’s long lost son, Patrick, into the mix. Justin Hartley (Smallville, Passions, Emily Owens, M.D.) is going to fit in nicely, I think. But, man, Patrick and Victoria’s relationship is already weirdly twisted. That’s all I have to say there. Oh and Shallow TV Alert: It’s Hartley’s first episode and they already worked a shirtless scene into the action. You’re welcome for the heads up.

As for Emily, her revengenda includes stepping up her revenging plan against the Graysons. She wants to get back at them anyway but there’s a reason why she’s having to zero in her focus big time. Like the ABC description states, her plan is “set against an unexpected timeline.” While we know things won’t end well for her (see the below video), it’s going to be fun to see how she exacts payback.

There’s one Emily/Jack moment that is crushing. That’s all I’ll say. I do have some issues with the episode. But before making a judgment on season three, I’ll need to see more. And I will continue to watch because I did get a season one kind of vibe in tonight’s premiere, which is a good thing.

So tune into the Revenge season three premiere at 9/8c on ABC.
