While I loved the episode and was so glad to see the show return, I can’t say I “loved” every Moment of Goodness. I mean, yes, I loved them for the way they were handled and the way they were shot and what the characters brought to the scene, but that doesn’t mean I have to like WHAT happened!

That being said, I’ll start with my first Moment of Goodness – Matt’s departure. While I knew it was inevitable (due to the fact that Mark Blucas‘ will be appearing on a new ABC show this fall), I still hate to see him go. And to be sent off in to the sunset to raise a baby with his rebound girlfriend…he deserves better. But that being said, I know that they had to leave last season open for his return if his new show wasn’t picked up. However, if it doesn’t last, I’m expecting Matt return, do you hear me, producers?! Despite the fact that I am sad to see Matt go, I absolutely loved his send off. I found it so touching (especially the handshake-turned-hug with TK) and having just the right amount of sentiment without being too melodramatic. The goodbye between him and Dani encompassed everything between them with so few words actually spoken. I felt like that spoke volumes to the connection and understanding of one another that these two have. But his exit won’t only be personal. On a professional level, I feel Matt has always been the buffer between the team and management (and often between Dani and management) so it will be interesting to see how the Hawks function without him.

Okay, now on to my more lighthearted moments of goodnness. First, round of applause for TK. Mehcad Brooks absolutely cracks me up and managed to hit the nail on the head this week. I could not stop laughing at the scene where he met with the new therapist and compared him not only to Wolf Blitzer, but also the unibomber. His picking up the pad of paper and pen to take “his own notes notes” was such a TK thing to do and while I’d normally consider this extremely belittling and arrogant, I know that that’s who TK is so I had no problem with it. And let’s be honest, it was coming from a good place. It was nothing against that therapist in particular. Gandhi could’ve been sitting across from TK and he still would’ve preferred Dr D.

“I don’t see why you need a pad. Dr D never wrote anything down. She remembered everything I said because it was important to her. Plus she had a sofa, okay? With some comfy-ass pillows.”

TK may be a jerk sometimes, but deep down he has a heart and stands up for the people he cares about, even if he has a funny way of showing it.

That brings me to my final moment – TK and Dr. D. I loved this. And I have been waiting for a scene like this for the whole series. Its obvious to the viewers that TK values and appreciates Dani; however, we’ve only seen TK acknowledge this himself once, very briefly. So to see him fight for Dani warmed my heart.

“There would probably be no career or TK without you. He can’t just take you away from me. He doesn’t own me, it’s not Django!”

He may have been yelling, but his words were expressing his loyalty. A big show is the only way TK knows how to operate, so it’s what’s between the lines that truly counts. And while I understand it, it broke my heart when Dani told him they weren’t friends. Yes, they have a professional relationship, but I’d like to think she realizes that her connection with TK is more than it is with anyone else. Most of all, I love that TK was willing to give up the thing he loves most — football– to be with Dr. D. And in a totally non-romantic way. I mean, how often do we see something like that?! Especially from a character who has been so selfish in the past? I feel like this could be the beginning of a new TK — after all, he went back to the new coach ready and willing to play by his rules — something the stubborn old TK would never even consider! And I hope that he and Dani can continue to work together because I feel like now, more than ever before, we see the impact she has on him and the effect she can have on his life…maybe he is ready to fly solo, but I don‘t want their relationship to end. The scenes between TK and Dani have always been some of my favorites and I can only hope for more as the season continues.
Necessary Roughness airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA Network.
