I’m not sure what’s up with the ABC promo team, but they’re touting Thursday as the premiere of Motive, when it’s actually soft launching tonight in Castle‘s timeslot. The Canadian series, which has already been renewed for a second season, just wrapped its first season last week.

The series stars Kristin Lehman and Louis Ferreira as Vancouver homicide detectives Angie Flynn and Oscar Vega. Lauren Holly is their coroner, Betty Rogers, and Roger Cross (pulling triple duty between this, Continuum, and Arrow) is their sergeant, Boyd Bloom.

Turning the idea of a procedural on its head, each episode covers a murder but identifies the killer and the victim right up front and leaves the rest of the episode to explain the why. It’s a crafty premise, and the show is written in such a way that “You think you know, but you have no idea” could easily be its tagline.

The show shot in Vancouver last winter and is chock full of familiar faces as guest stars. That’s part of the fun in each episode, as you recognize folks not always playing to type. What’s most intriguing to me is that Lehman and Ferreira, and even Holly, look like they’re having a ball, despite the subject matter. That’s not altogether rare for the ladies, but Ferreira has had a solid career playing the heavy–I honestly had to rack my brain for the last role he played where he laughed and smiled without nefarious intent.

After the sneak peek tonight at 10/9c, the show settles into its regular Thursday night timeslot at 9 pm/8c before fellow import Rookie Blue, which is returning for it’s fourth season. Here’s a look at Motive.
