TV Goodness Reports: A&E Renews Bates Motel for a Second Season

Good news from A&E! Just three episodes into the first season, they’ve renewed the creepy, cool Bates Motel for a second season. We’re loving this new drama, and I’m so glad we’ll have another season to watch whatever the hell is going on with Norma and Norman (or Mr. and Mrs. Bates as Norma’s “other” son, Dylan, hilariously refers to them at the breakfast table). Kudos to A&E for locking in the excellent Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore for another ten episodes.

We can only imagine what’s left to unravel this season. We know Norman has stumbled into something sinister in the deputy’s basement. Or has he? We’ve had a sneak peek that perhaps what Norman sees and hears isn’t always right in front of him, and what he does see, whether real or not, is unsettling. It was terribly uncool of him to bark at Emma last week. I hope she chews on him for that at some point, or cuts him loose.

Sidebar: I’m not terribly thumbs up on the local hospital if they ran a battery of scans on Norman and didn’t find the teensiest indicator that he might be wired wrong. That doesn’t bode well.

I’m loving all the location shooting (and they way they worked a CG pot farm into the standard BC forestry shots), and we’re getting Canadian casting bonuses! Eagle-eyed viewers will recognize Dylan’s new work buddy, Ethan (Terry Chen), as Liber8er Curtis from Continuum.

You can catch the next new episode tonight at 10/9c on A&E. If you haven’t checked it out yet, the first three episodes are up at the A&E website.

Yes, the Deputy is the real mystery this season because he’s been chatting up Norman’s mom while hiding some dark, sinister secret. Then again, if you look at the whole town of White Pine Bay it’s got something to hide as well. Every one of them seems to be “wired” a little funny and Norman is fitting in better than his mother. I watched the sneak peek in my office a few weeks back and I really wanted to find out more. That’s how I got stuck on it and I make sure to watch it each week. I can’t wait to see what will happen in season two.
