Moment of Goodness: Arthur and Gwen Get Married, Merlin “The Sword in the Stone: Part 2”

Warning: Stop reading right now if you haven’t watched the finale

I’ll admit it: I was a little bit devastated when Arthur broke up with Gwen and banished her from Camelot earlier this season. We know the truth of her betrayal and I’ve been waiting all season for Morgana to come clean about her part in it. That didn’t happen, but something else did. I didn’t expect it this soon, but I’m overjoyed.

Not only did Arthur and Gwen reunite, but they got married. You can’t see it, but I’m smiling ear to ear right now. I loved the scene at the end when Arthur crowns his new Queen. Was I the only one happily surprised by these developments? I knew they’d find their way back to each other, but not this quickly. I’m not complaining though. I’m so excited to see them married and starting a new life together. Whatever challenges they have to face in the future they can now face them together.

Other Interesting Developments:

Merlin kills Agravaine. I always like it when Merlin uses his magic – by stealth or outright – to put someone in their place, but I didn’t expect him to kill Agravaine. I know he had to do it, it just surprised me. And even though Merlin knew he was doing the right thing, you could see how much he was fighting that decision.

Arthur pulls the sword from the stone. Merlin needed some way for Arthur to get his confidence back and show him how much his people loved and believed in him. What better way than to add to a well-known story every child in Camelot knows? The best part of the scene though, is seeing Merlin encourage and believe in Arthur. Sometimes I get tired of all their bickering and just want to enjoy a genuine moment of brotherhood and friendship between Arthur and Merlin.

Helios kills Isolde. I didn’t expect Isolde to die. I got a little bit excited when she and Tristan decided to join Arthur’s cause. I was even hoping the actors would become regulars for season 5. But it wasn’t meant to be. Their love and devotion to each other brought Arthur and Gwen back together so I have to be thankful for that.

The young dragon wakes Morgana.  I didn’t like seeing the dragon interact with Morgana at all. We know she’s going to try to use the creature for her evil purposes, but I’m not too worried about it. Merlin’s the last dragon lord and no matter what Morgan does she can’t break that bond.

What did you think of the finale? And the season? Merlin returns for Season 5 next winter.
