It’s Complicated: Winona Leaves Raylan…Again, Justified “When the Guns Come Out”

I watched “Thick As Mud” so late last week that I thought I’d wait to watch “When the Guns Come Out” to write about Winona and Raylan. I’m glad I did.

While I’m a huge fan of Natalie Zea, I’ve never really loved Winona. When she stole that money last season it was the end of things for me. And, quite frankly, I thought she took it again just like Raylan did. I like that Raylan was finally able to track her down, but he also had to learn that Winona left him the first time (well the first time this time) the same day he got shot. It’s clear to see these two love each other, but Winona makes a very good point. If Raylan had wanted to change his life for her he would’ve already done it. Ouch. But there’s so much truth in that statement Raylan can’t even argue with her.

I was a bit worried about Raylan making it out of Harlan alive in this episode. With Winona gone and Raylan distracted, I really felt like he was taking some unnecessary risks. So many people want to see him at least out of the picture if not dead. Arlo’s stirring up trouble – although that’s no surprise. Boyd’s trying to assert control over the oxy trade in Harlan, and carpetbagger Quarles is trying to get his piece of the pie. And then Raylan lands in the middle of all that. Most of the time I don’t worry about Raylan. He’s a quick draw and he manages to get himself out of a lot of scrapes. But he’s emotionally compromised and not really making the best decisions right now. While I guess I’m glad Art didn’t let him take some time off, I’m also glad Raylan’s still alive. I wonder how much longer Arlo’s got. Raylan just can’t seem to stop losing people he loves.

Justified airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on FX.
