Moment of Goodness: Cassie Has a Meltdown with John Blackwell, The Secret Circle “Return”

We’ve heard about John Blackwell in hushed tones all season and I was a big fat “don’t care” until I heard he was going to be played by Joe Lando (I am a child of the 80s). When Cassie finally meets him, she, too, has a big fat “don’t care” reaction, until Adam hints that maybe he’s not there for her.

When John confirms as much by asking for the medallion, she completely loses her sh-t, snotty tears and all, and rages at him about abandoning her mother and her and all the things he didn’t miss because she didn’t have or do them. And he just takes it, welling up at what he’d left behind. It was an awesome scene for Britt Robertson to finally unleash everything Cassie’s been hanging onto since her mother died and her life upended with her arrival in Chance Harbor.

Things got all sort of convoluted later but I was glad that Cassie really unloaded all over him what his legacy and MIA status had done to her.

I was so glad John had reached a sort of detente with her at the end of the episode. With Jane still (ridiculously) off camera, Cassie needs some sort of adult in her life, and if John really is powerless and the Hunters really are after him, it should be an interesting dynamic to watch. Whatever it is, I’m looking forward to Lando fleshing out the character and joining the oldsters (said as a fellow oldster) in the cast.

We have to wait four weeks to find out. The Secret Circle is on hiatus until March 15th, when new episodes resume at 9 pm/8c on The CW.
