Jane By Design’s Moment of Goodness: Billy’s Back in “The Teen Model”

High school can be tough. I think it should be a time when we’re questioning who we are and what we believe. We’re deciding the kind of people we want to become, who to love, and what we want to be “when we grow up.” There so much pressure to look and act a certain way and a few episodes ago I would’ve said Billy was someone who knew exactly who he was and wasn’t going to apologize to anyone for it. But after he started dating Lulu – who’s actually been growing on me – Billy had to start worrying about how others saw him, namely her father. Lulu comes from a family with good breeding (they’re snobby) and Lulu’s friends are expected to look and act a certain way.

I have to tell you now I hated Billy’s new look – I’ll term it a “makeunder.” He tamed down his awesome hair and started dressing in preppy clothes. Don’t get me wrong, some guys can rock that look and make it hot and I’m not going to say Billy didn’t look good. But I was used to his old look. In fact, I love his big hair, earrings, and rock n’ roll clothes. If people aren’t willing to look past the exterior – and there are a lot of people in high school and in the world who aren’t – why waste your time on them?

I can understand why Jane wasn’t supportive of his new look either. I think she was worried that Billy felt pressure to become a new person. Peer pressure can be incredibly intense and I think we’d all like to think we’re above it. But we’re not. I can understand that Billy is trying very hard not to be like his brother, but all I need is actions to prove that. And we’re seen that Billy is nothing like Tommy. So when Billy surprises Jane at the end of the episode with his old look, I know I wasn’t the only one excited to see the Billy I know and love is back. He shouldn’t have to change how he looks for other people. He needs to be true to himself.

Bonus Moment of Goodness

Jane and Nick are killing me with cuteness right now – but in a good way. I’ve been rooting for these two more with every passing week and I love how their relationship is evolving. Before they get any closer Jane really does need to come clean about her job. Nick will not like that she’s been lying to him and he definitely needs to hear the truth from her. As soon as possible. But in the meantime, I’m enjoying seeing them together. They might want to slow things down a little, but I like where this is going.

Jane By Design airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC Family.
