It’s Complicated: The Beast Does Have a Heart, Once Upon a Time “Skin Deep”

I loved Once Upon a Time‘s take on Beauty and the Beast. I had no idea Robert Carlyle’s Rumpelstiltskin was the beast (until I got spoiled earlier this week) to Emilie de Ravin‘s Belle. And the corresponding tale in Storybrooke was quite compelling as well. It’s nice to know that Mr. Gold actually does care about something and someone other than himself. It’s intriguing to see Regina ask for his real name and him to give it as Rumpelstiltskin in Storybrooke. And it’s good to know that true love’s kiss can break any curse.

This show keeps surprising me every week. We all know the tale as old as time (sorry, I had to). I really liked the slightly modern take on a familiar story. It was interesting to see that someone could chip away at the beast’s tough exterior and not only get him to care for her, but for her to also care for him. It’s not like he treated Belle badly. Well, he did at first but as they spent more time together she had greater freedom and became more curious about him. We don’t know what happened to Rumpel’s son after he became the beast and it seems like it will be a while before we find out. But Belle was curious enough about that and her feelings for him that she came back to him after the beast set her free.

But true to form, Rumpel’s too much of a coward to believe anyone can really love him, especially when he thinks the Evil Queen may be involved. So he sends her away and later the queen tells him Belle is dead. After she returned to her father, he shunned her and drove her to suicide. But I wonder if that’s the truth. We know part of the story is true – Gaston did “desert” Belle. But is she really dead? We know she’s alive in Storybrooke. She’s just been hidden away by Regina, looking for some leverage on Mr. Gold.

The most surprising and interesting thing, though, from “Skin Deep” is that chipped teacup. I love that it exists in both worlds and that Mr.Gold/Rumpel values it above all else. I can’t wait to see what happens when Mr. Gold finds out Belle is alive in Storybrooke. I want a ringside seat to the fireworks show that will be Mr. Gold and Regina’s confrontation.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
