Moment of Goodness: 7 Dwarfs Take Snow In, Once Upon a Time “7:15 A.M.”

I’m not ashamed to admit I cried last night after that Snow and Charming scene. That she had to say goodbye to her true love to keep him safe was truly heartbreaking. I have to give it to Alan Dale for making me believe he’d follow through on his threat to kill James if Snow didn’t do what he wanted. That man plays the villain so well. But to watch Snow have to say that she didn’t love James and to see James react to those words hurt my heart a little. The most touching part of the episode happens later when the dwarfs find Snow in the woods and invite her to come home with them. It’s out of loss that this new little family is born and it’s my moment of goodness.

I loved the way Snow met Grumpy in jail and later helped him escape from the palace. I love that we learned something about Grumpy that – as far as I know – isn’t in any version of this fairytale. And I love that the dwarfs see a person in pain and in need and take her into their home and their lives. But maybe the best part of Snow meeting these dwarfs is that this new family wants to help her with her grief. They’re all mourning a loss. They want to help her get a little better every day but they would never want to make that pain go away – it’s what makes them who they are. But Snow can only take so much heartache and before the news of James’s broken engagement makes it to her, she drinks Rumpelstiltskin’s magic forgetting potion. She’s not in pain anymore, but she also has no idea who Charming is.

I love the symmetry of this show. If Mary Margaret and David are together, Snow and Charming are not. I think that’s the way it should be. I want to root for these two and if they’re not working either in the “real world” or in the fairytale world, I want to see how they make their way back to each other. I don’t know how or why I’m so incredibly invested in these two, but I like it. I look forward to discovering more about what forces will conspire to keep them together or break them apart.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
