Mid-Season TV Crush: The Firm’s Callum Keith Rennie

Y’all already know I have a Canadian actor problem. Well one Mr. Callum Keith Rennie is a big reason for that. I first found him on Due South in 1999 and was pretty much immediately a goner. The Internet was a baby then, so chasing down his other work (thank you, IMdB) meant buying VHS tapes from eBay and half.com. And that’s exactly what I did.

So color me super happy when he started popping up more frequently on U.S. television–except that he was almost always the villain. You’ll get no argument from me that he’s an accomplished badass, but I prefer him with the swagger or funny or both (most deftly done in Californication, where he should have had an Emmy nomination) and that seems to be what he’s doing in The Firm, which definitely adds to his crushworthy appeal.

Loved him in The Killing and was so pleased when he was included in the cast list for The Firm. Love it even more that he’s playing Ray, the role originated by David Strathairn in the film (that combo of awesome seems tailored just for me). He’s also a scream with Juliette Lewis, who fills Holly Hunter’s original stilettos.

Longtime fans of Rennie’s work will be tickled that he’s working opposite Molly Parker, with whom he’s done some, shall we say, darker work. Ditto for Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer. Since the show shoots in Toronto, Rennie is likely to be one of many Canadian HITGs we’ll get this season.

The Firm airs tonight on NBC at 10/9c. if you missed the first three episodes, you can catch them on nbc.om or Hulu.
