Game Changer: Deb Sees Her Brother Kill Travis, Dexter “This is the Way the World Ends”

Deb actually sees her brother kill Travis. Talk about a truly game-changing finale. I think a lot of fans, including me, had wondered when Deb was going to find out about Dexter. She’s a good cop and it just wasn’t making sense that she didn’t make this connection before. Of course, maybe the fact that Deb thinks she’s in love with her brother made her judgment cloudy up until this point. I guess the one good thing (and it’s not now nor ever will be truly good) about Deb wanting to tell Dexter she’s in love with him is that it got her to the church to see Dexter kill Travis. It’s about time Deb knew. Now the question is: What’s she going to do about it?

Maybe the more important question is: What do we want Deb to do with this knowledge? Will she try to convince herself that she didn’t see Dexter kill Travis? Will this help her understand why Dexter is the way he is? Will Deb arrest her brother for murder? Will she find out he’s the Bay Harbor Butcher? Will Deb still think she’s in love with Dexter after this? How will this affect Harrison? All I have are questions but I’m excited to find out the answers. I really want to see Dexter try to talk his way out of this. I can’t imagine how the show’s going to continue for two more season now that Deb knows.

The other potential – but much less shocking – game changer is that Sgt. Batista put the papers in to transfer Quinn out of homicide. Of course, he did it because Quinn has been nothing but a screw up since Deb broke up with him. It’s been interesting to watch Quinn circle the drain since Deb turned down his proposal. Meaningless sex? Check. Lost his service gun? Check. Put his partner’s life in danger? Check. I never thought we’d see Quinn self-destruct in this way but his behavior is a testament (in a way) to his feelings for Deb. I honestly didn’t think he had it in him. Now that Quinn’s told his rep he’s “an alcoholic,” the department can’t transfer or fire him as long and he’s seeking treatment. I have to admit sometimes Quinn surprises me. And I’m not ready to see him go just yet, although I am excited he’s in the Season 3 premiere of Justified.

What else do we have to look forward to next season? Louis Greene is showing serial killer tendencies so it makes me think Dexter might take on an apprentice. LaGuerta surprised me at the end of the episode. I think Deb needs to be careful, but if she wants a mentor she might be well served to have LaGuerta on her side. Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to have some dirt on LaGuerta and she can’t get that unless she’s close to her.

What did you think of the finale? Did it make the missteps of the season worth it? Did you like how it ended? What are you looking forward to next season?

Dexter returns for season 7 in 2012.
