Tina’s 2011 TV Goodness All-Stars: Castle’s Stana Katic

Full disclosure: I started watching Castle for Nathan Fillion. That’s it. However, I quickly learned the entire cast was incredible. So you could say while I started watching for Nathan, I stayed for Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, Tamala Jones and the rest of the Castle cast. I want to shine the spotlight on Stana this time around (Nathan is a Hall of Fame All-Star for sure) because I became more and more impressed by her in 2011. Stana’s character, Kate Beckett, has had a challenging year.

  • She’s had to continue to deal with her mom’s murder
  • Her boss and friend (Captain Montgomery) was killed after she learned he had a shady past
  • A sniper shot her in the chest at Montgomery’s funeral
  • She broke up with her doctor boyfriend
  • She was gone for a few months to heal which means she was away from the thing she loves to do (work)
  • She’s going to therapy to deal with the aftermath of her shooting
  • A sniper case triggered a bout of PTSD, which gave her panic attacks and made her feel helpless
  • And of course, she’s had to deal with the fact she has feelings for Castle and she’s keeping the secret that she heard him tell her he loves her after she was shot

Stana has always been good. But she’s taken things to a whole new level. Usually, Beckett is unflappable. But in “Kill Shot” she was far from it. Katic gave a real performance that I feel was her best all year. As much as I love the drama that follows Beckett around, it’s so great that she can smile and laugh at Castle shenanigans too. And that Beckett really is a fangirl at heart over sports, over TV shows, over comic books, and most importantly, over Castle’s novels. For some reason, that makes me happy. Maybe because Kate Beckett is this stunningly beautiful woman and a great but tough cop. Normally I would never relate to a character like her. But Kate has this love of pop culture I never guessed she would have. That part of her I can relate to the most. And that’s a cool thing.

As for Katic, she has proved she can handle the dramatic as well as the more comedic aspects of the show and her character. I feel 2012 will be an even better year for her.

Castle airs Mondays at 10/9c on ABC
