On the same night Ben and Leslie reunited on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, another relationship goodie happened on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory: Amy Farrah Fowler officially became Sheldon Cooper’s girlfriend. And it only took Amy unintentionally making Sheldon jealous for this to happen.Stuart, the comic book store owner with a severe case of low self esteem, took an interest in Amy and asked her out. The two went for coffee/Pumpkin lattes. All the while, Sheldon increasingly became concerned and, yes, jealous. He even friended Stuart on Facebook to find out how the coffee date went; and asked Penny out so he could try to make Amy jealous. Finally, Sheldon showed up at the movie theater and crashed Amy and Stuart’s second date which is the Moment of Goodness for “The Flaming Spittoon Acquisition.” Amy spending time with another guy forced Sheldon to suggest redefining the parameters of their relationship:

Sheldon: “I believe I would like to alter the paradigm of our relationship.” “I’m listening.” “With the understanding that nothing changes whatsoever — physical or otherwise — I would not object to us no longer characterizing you as not my girlfriend.”
Amy: “Interesting. Though try it without the quadruple negative.”
Sheldon: “You’re being impossible.”
Amy: (leans over to Stuart) “Hi, Stuart.”
Sheldon: “Fine. Amy, will you be my girlfriend?”
Amy: “Yes.”

Ever since Mayim Bialik joined the show I have enjoyed the quirky weirdness that is Amy’s relationship with Sheldon. I have also loved her dynamic with everyone on the hit comedy especially Sheldon, Penny and Bernadette. Amy and Sheldon’s “romance” has been on this slow train. Very slow. We’re talking stalled at the station slow. And at times, I’ve wondered if the couple was going to progress at all. So this was a big step for these characters who are heavy on the book smarts and light on real life experiences like falling in love.

Now if they could just get over their issues with touch and intimacy that would be great too. Actually, I have a feeling Amy wouldn’t mind taking their relationship to the next level. Sheldon’s the one that needs to get over some of his issues. I’m sure that’ll take another season or four. I’m just happy Sheldon recognized Amy as his girlfriend. It was a sweet, funny moment that was done in a way only The Big Bang Theory could pull off. These are two funny, quirky, slightly off-kilter characters that deserve to be together. I wonder how they’re going to interact in the future now they are official. Although, according to that lengthy 31-page contract Sheldon drew up that goes a long way in defining the paradigm of their relationship, I don’t think much really is going to change. And that’s okay with me as long as those two crazy kids stay together.

Jim Parsons and Bialik made this episode a joy to watch. As Amy and Sheldon, they were hilarious and touching and I get why Parsons is nominated for an Emmy year after year and that he wins too. Here’s to hoping Bialik gets her own supporting actress nod sometime soon. She’s that good on The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8/7c on CBS.
