Twisty Goodness: That Old Black(well) Magic, The Secret Circle “Balcoin”

More and more of Cassie Blake’s past is coming to light…or should I say dark? We’ve learned her genetics include a serious tie to dark magic. It’s through her father’s bloodline (her father being John Blackwell). And she has the potential to tap into that magic (which I believe she’s already inadvertently done while under duress). Now it’s going to be up to Cassie to either deny the darkness or give into it. I feel like it’s going to be quite seductive; it’s going to be difficult for her to stay good and pure. I watch Sam Winchester on Supernatural and Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, so I know what I’m talking about. Since “Balcoin” was the mid-season finale for The Secret Circle, we now have two months to stew on the Blackwell past. It definitely sounds like there was some serious mojo at work there. We’ll also have time to contemplate another major ditty that was revealed in this latest episode: Cassie isn’t the only child of Blackwell in the Circle. What a great twist there. Is it too obvious to speculate on Faye being the one? Is she the red herring since we learned her mom, Dawn, had a major thing for JB back in the day? Right now she seems the likely candidate, but I hope the show will surprise us. I also hope the show will start giving us flashbacks to the past, so we can see Amelia, John Blackwell, Charles, Dawn and all that business for ourselves. I’m beyond curious.

The drama on The Secret Circle is picking up. The dynamic between Charles and Dawn has gotten infinitely more interesting now that Charles is trying to insert his authority and not let Dawn make the decisions on everything. And what they did to poor Grandma Blake is just so sad. It’s like she has a magical form of Alzheimer’s. She’s forgetting things and getting names wrong and her mind is a sieve right now. I’m also digging the witch hunter story with the Council. The jury’s still out on Jake, however.

There being another Blackwell/Balcoin in the mix is wonderful. Because I’m sort of tired of the “one chosen” kind of story. There being two raises the stakes and creates more excitement as far as I’m concerned. The whole relationship stuff on this show, I think, is the weakest link. The connections just aren’t there yet. I don’t really have a couple I’m rooting for, especially now that Nick is gone. I was actually liking Nick and Melissa. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m super excited for the second half of The Secret Circle that hits airwaves next year.

The Secret Circle returns with more episodes Thursday January 5, 2012 at 9/8c.
