The CW’s The Vampire Diaries’ Season 3 Preview

So, it’s just about that time again. Where we catch our breath, clutch our pearls, and OMG it through another season of The Vampire Diaries. In some ways it seems like “only season three?” and in others it seems like “shouldn’t these kids be out of high school already?” (not that I’m angling for TVDU anytime soon). I didn’t rewatch the second season over the summer, so let’s catch up on why we’re anticipating the start of the third season Thursday night at 8 pm ET on the CW. (Disclaimer: I do not read nor know any spoilers; I’m guesstimating on the basis of previews and advance episode photography.)

Where to begin?

Tyler and Caroline — Judging by the promo, they are finally pulling the trigger on letting Caroline and Tyler be together (and if the CW promo monkeys have played with my brain, check this space later in the week for a dram of rage). Y’all know that I loved their arc last season and was not a happy camper when Tyler took a wolfy sabbatical. Jumpy claps that Candice Accola and Michael Trevino get to finally play off of each other again.

Jeremy’s harem — He’s going to have some explaining to do with Bonnie once the word’s out that he’s got not one, but two, dead exes rattling around his noggin. I like a flustered Jeremy, so this ought to be interesting.

Elena’s harem — Good brother, bad brother, no brother at all, Elena has to feel her way around this new dynamic when it looks like Stefan really is Klaus’s bitch boy for a while (and doing a weird vampy version of Supernatural road tripping), which  leaves Damon to be the go-to Salvatore as the season begins with her 18th birthday party.

Behind the scenes — I’m always intrigued when a showrunner starts to multitask and now that Kevin Williamson is shepherding The Secret Circle in addition to TVD, I’m curious if we’ll slow down on the breakneck plotting. Kinda hope so, kinda don’t.

And that’s just the highlights. We’ve also got Mamas Forbes and Lockwood, Alaric, and Matt roaming around in search of a plot. I can’t believe we’re already to the fall premiere. Bring it!
