Tune in Alert: Breakout Kings Season 1 Finale

Just a reminder: The season finale of A&E’s Breakout Kings airs tonight at 10/9C on A&E. A synopsis:

Season Finale: Carmen Vega, the ruthless queen pin of a drug cartel, pulls of a violent and deadly escape while attending the funeral of her slain son. Her plan: to get the family business back in order and hand over the keys to the kingdom to her heir apparent, her son Cesar. Carmen will stop at nothing, including killing a member of her team and even her own family, to put Cesar on the throne. The Breakout Kings seem to be one step behind Carmen at every turn and they smell a rat. Is there an informant within the team? The stakes get higher when Shea’s girlfriend is taken hostage as part of Carmen’s plan.

Reasons to watch Breakout Kings and hope for a second season:

  • The concept. I like that this series takes the most interesting aspect of FOX’s late semi-great Prison Break and concentrates on that as well as the apprehension of the criminals who make their escape.
  • Interesting Characters. Each one has a story and for the most part I’m buying into all of them. The most interesting: Jimmi Simpson’s Lloyd Lowery. He’s kind of a quirky freak of nature; he’s this psychology/profiling expert but at the same time he doesn’t seem to have any common sense when it comes to reading people. He has almost no filter and is borderline racist yet I totally love him. What else is great is while it took a little time for the cast chemistry to completely gel, it has. And the interactions between the characters have taken on a whole new life. We’re getting revelations about their pasts and gaining insights into their messed up psyches. I’m loving Brooke Nevin’s Julianne as well. I’m wondering if they’re moving towards some sort of Lloyd-Julianne connection/hook-up. That would be interesting to me. Of course Julianne would have to get over her crush on Ray first.

  • The Guest Stars. For a first season show on A&E, the guest stars have been stellar. First, I love that Robert Knepper did an episode as his Prison Break alter ego, T-Bag. But over the course of the season, we’ve also gotten guest star appearances from Mark Pellegrino and Richard Burgi. And tonight’s finale is no different. Lauren Velez from New York Undercover and HBO’s awesome Oz (she’s also currently on Showtime’s Dexter) guest stars. I can’t wait to see her embody a full-fledged villainous role. She’s always played flawed characters but from the previews she seems to be playing someone unflinchingly evil and supremely badass. Hope that’s true.

I’ll be watching the Season 1 finale of A&E’s Breakout Kings which airs at 10/9 Central. Hope you guys will be as well. I want to hear some good news soon about a second season. Click here to watch a preview of tonight’s episode: “Where in the World is Carmen Vega.” Love the title.
