Postscript: Adios, Hellcats

Tom Welling is going to be pissed. He lost both CW gigs this week. Hellcats, which he was producing alongside his on-and-offscreen Smallville duties, has been cancelled. I get it though. The series started strong last fall, and I was hooked, but when it diverted into what I unaffectionately refer to as “love geometry,” with long-ago romances interfering with new ones, I was bored already. And apparently, so were many other viewers, because the ratings bucketed when the show returned this spring.

I kept watching because I’d still find little moments that made it worth my time–having Marti find out her dad was still alive and she had a sister was an intriguing development. Having Marti fall into bed with her (former) prof (even if he was Gale Harold), not so much.

Best wishes to the awesome ensemble cast that they land on other projects this summer (and can finally eat something! =). Lots of new shows this fall = plenty of opportunities. It was my first introduction to Aly Michalka, Heather Hemmens, and Ashley Tisdale (because I’m OLD), but I was already a fan of Gail O’Grady, Matt Long, and Robbie Jones. I’m sorry to see it go, but more disappointed, I think, that the show got lost in there and didn’t have time to get its audience back before the CW found a few pilots worthier of the timeslot.

The last episode airs tonight. Because it’s the CW, I would expect DVDs, so yay for that.
