Moment of Goodness: Elena Earns Elijah’s Trust on The Vampire Diaries “Klaus”

I loved tonight’s episode. Ever since we were introduced to Elijah I’ve tried so hard not to like him. I just can’t do it, which is a huge credit to Daniel Gillies (and the writers, of course). He infuses Elijah with charm, wit, great pathos, and vulnerability. I loved every scene he was in tonight. In fact, I loved every scene he was in with Elena/Katerina. Learning all that backstory on the Originals as well as the real reason Klaus wants to break the sun and the moon curse is fascinating. But what really got to me, what truly pulled on my heart strings was seeing how Elijah was with Katerina all those years ago. When he wakes up from his latest “death” and thinks Elena is Katerina at the beginning of the episode? Wow. That was a powerful moment. But my favorite moment doesn’t come until Elena returns to Elijah, as promised.

By demonstrating she’s true to her word Elena proves something to Elijah. Did you see his face when she came through that door? He was definitely surprised, but I’d say he was also pleased and maybe also hopeful. Elijah was in love with Katerina all those years ago and it’s clear she also felt something for him. Was it love? I don’t know but I’m pretty confident we’ll find out by the end of the season. Something also tells me Katherine will also try to break whatever bond is forming between Elena and Elijah. And I gotta say I’m looking forward to seeing that. I do fear that Elijah will make the ultimate sacrifice for Elena/Katerina but until then I want to see him take his brother down by any means necessary. It should make for some excellent television.

Since we’re on that subject, let’s talk about Elijah and Klaus for a moment. There were some pretty unexpected twists in that mythology. We now know Elijah and Klaus are brothers. Well, half brothers. They made up the story of the sun and the moon curse to help them find the moonstone. They figured if both the vampires and the werewolves were looking for it, it would be discovered faster. The ritual will break the curse but it’s a curse that only affects Klaus, who is half vampire and half werewolf. He wants to combine his two halves to make the most supreme supernatural being on earth. He’s not above killing anyone who stands in his way – including his own brother. Elijah found a way to keep the doppelganger alive after the ritual but Klaus isn’t interested. He definitely sees humans as inferior beings and can’t be bothered to care about them. And now that he’s back in his own body his full strength has probably returned. Watch out Mystic Falls; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
