SPOILER ALERT: This entire article is based on a recent spoiler that has been long rumored but has recently gained fresh legs.
We recently read a TVLine.com article featuring Katerina Graham (Bonnie) saying a series regular on The Vampire Diaries is going to die by season’s end (along with a couple other alleged deaths if rumors are to be believed). As much as we know big TV deaths help prove that the universe we’re watching is high stakes, there are certain characters we don’t want to see go. This isn’t meant as a slight against any of the other characters because it’ll be heartbreaking to see anyone go. Losing even one would make our hearts hurt. Seriously, we have become invested in and attached to ALL the citizens of Mystic Falls and the actors who portray them. However, there are those characters we consider untouchable. PLEASE DO NOT KILL OFF.Â
DISCLAIMER: We’re working under the assumption that Stefan, Elena and Damon are safe.
Kara’s Untouchables

Bonnie. I’m not ready to part with our resident witch. There’s still so much we don’t know about the witchcraft world and she hasn’t come close to learning everything there is to know about her powers. In fact, it would be nice to see a witch or warlock come into town (one who doesn’t have ulterior motives) as a mentor/teacher.

Jeremy. I can’t imagine Mystic Falls without him for a number of reasons, my first being totally shallow. He’s hot and I love him with Bonnie. Secondly, if anything happened to him Elena would be devastated and this would be a very different show. I like that he’s (just a) human and is doing everything he can to fit into this strange world of witches, werewolves, and vampires.
Alaric. I love his complicated past with Isobel and his complicated future with Jenna, assuming he has one. His friendship with Damon? Didn’t see that coming but I love how it’s affecting both of them. He’s a force for good in this crazy world and I don’t want to see it snuffed out. Also, great eye candy.
Caroline. I can’t imagine this show without her, especially since she vamped out. For me, she’s become more interesting and dynamic. I love that she feels torn between her loyalty to the vampires and her loyalty to Tyler. She knows what he’s going through as her transformation into something supernatural is also recent. The love triangle with Matt and Tyler is such great TV. I’m not ready for it to end yet.

Tyler. So, I’ve mentioned I like eye candy right? But it’s so much more than that. When we first met him he was a total dick but he’s become such an interesting, sympathetic character. He’s tortured on many levels and it really works for him. I can’t wait for him to come back from wherever he went with that werewolf bitch Jules.
Tina’s Untouchables Â

Damon. I know Damon’s safe but I’m including including him on my list anyway. He’s badass. He expresses himself with his eyebrows. He has chemistry with everyone in Mystic Falls. He’s a lover AND a fighter. Damon Salvatore’s dashing, dark and utterly delicious. No way would Mystic Falls be as compelling without him — or as much fun.
Bonnie. I feel like we haven’t seen the best of Bonnie yet. And she’s just started a relationship with Jeremy that needs to last for longer than five seconds. Putting an end to this adorable couple so soon would be unfair. Besides, she’s the go-to gal anytime Damon and Stefan need some serious mojo and she’d defend her best friend Elena with her life. She must live.
Caroline. If this were Season 1, I would probably have left her off this list. Thankfully, it’s Season 2 so it’s a whole other game. She’s been nothing short of amazing since going vamp. So to off her would definitely be uncool. Without Caroline there’d be no triangle with Matt and Tyler. And even more than that? Stefan and Caroline scenes would be no more. And that’s criminal.

Matt. He’s just a human, but that’s OK. He’s had this tough life yet he always seems to rise above it. That is, until he found out Caroline was a vampire. Matt needs to live so those two can have a chance at more than two seconds of happiness. Plus, the boy is freakin’ hot. Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson cannot eliminate such hotness from our lives. They just can’t.

Alaric. I should be saying things like Alaric needs to stick around for Jenna and to explore all his angst from his doomed marriage to Isobel. But I’m not. What I’m going to say is Alaric is on my “do not kill” list because of the Damon-Alaric bromance. This friendship cannot be extinguished. It must grow and develop and be allowed to be the awesome thing that it is.
Heather’s Untouchables
Good God, y’all. Ease us back after the hiatus why don’t you?? My five “thou shalt not kill, kay?” are:
Bonnie. The groundling. She keeps everybody in check and she’s Jeremy’s most recent chance at happiness. Need I say more?

Caroline/Tyler. I’m cheating here because they’re intertwined in my mind. We need them both, whatever’s coming. One without the other would be too much angst, even for the CW.

Jenna. I’m a “no” in this category UNLESS she finally figures everything out. If she were to be deleted as a character while still clueless, that woud be insult, meet injury, and a disservice to Sara Canning, the actress who’s made me care for Jenna despite her supreme naivete.

Alaric. As much for Matt Davis, the actor, as Alaric, the character, we need him to go forward because he’s had a complete arc–guileless human to grieving husband to vampire killer to sort-of-superhuman vampire sympathizer. If Jenna stays, he needs to stay.
Matt. At the risk of sounding immature, duh. You don’t wipe out the innocent when you likely have five seasons to go.
What we really hope will happen is a character will “die” and be turned into something undead so they can “live” on this show for a long time to come. Look at Caroline Forbes. Her undead existence has turned her into one of the best reasons to watch The Vampire Diaries. This is one show where death doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.
The Vampire Diaries returns with new episodes tonight at 8/7C on the CW.
