Moment of Goodness: Alaric Turns Deadly at the Dinner Table, The Vampire Diaries, “The Dinner Party”

I don’t have much to complain about when it comes to Season Two of The Vampire Diaries. If there’s anything, it’s that there are certain members of the cast I think could be used more. Mainly, I’m talking about Matt and Alaric, especially since this season, the show has finally found plenty of things for Caroline and Tyler to do.Let’s just focus on Alaric for a while, since I fell even deeper in love with the character in “The Dinner Party.” I think he stepped up in a big, bad and, let me say, super sexy way, to help Damon get rid of our favorite original, Elijah. Uncle Daddy John had given the Salvatore a weapon and a way to kill an original, so Damon set up this party, which would provide the perfect occasion to off Elijah.

Alaric knew he was on the outs with Jenna; there had been tension between the two all day and at the dinner party as well. But that didn’t distract him from keeping Damon from making a big mistake. You see, the one who used the knife to kill an original had to be human. Once Alaric found out this significant development, he first prevented the vampire Damon from doing the deed. And then when Jenna was in the kitchen and the rest of them were sitting at the table waiting for dessert to come, out of nowhere, Alaric snuck up behind Elijah and stabbed him in the back with the deadly dagger. I really didn’t see that coming. As much as I love to hate Elijah, I loved Alaric being the one to take the risk. I’ve been waiting for the show to come up with something for him to do, and at least in this episode, they did it.

Of course, they didn’t know they had to keep the dagger in place for the original to stay dead; so, Elijah made his escape. That doesn’t change how Alaric and Damon have grown into this great team. And, it doesn’t change how I love every time Ian Somerhalder and Matt Davis share a scene together. Alaric even recognized their bond: “I am your friend, damn it! And you don’t have any friends. So, no more lying!” Alaric getting in on the action was a very satisfying moment. Now, if he could just do something about that pesky Uncle Daddy John, who is now in possession of the ring that’ll enable him to withstand being killed. That leaves Alaric in a vulnerable position and I don’t want to think about that.
