Mid-Season TV Crushes: Starz’s Spartacus Gods of the Arena

Here’s the situation. I remember watching an episode of Spartacus: Blood and Sand when I subscribed to Starz and really disliking it. I found out later it wasn’t the pilot so I probably shouldn’t have started with that one. After a number of people I know continued to tell me how much they liked it I decided to give it another try and I’m really glad I did. I wouldn’t call this series high-brow by any means but it is so much fun. I like seeing half-naked men parade around my TV screen for an hour at a time. I like Lucy Lawless and John Hannah as scheming, grasping characters. And I like that we get a prequel to a story I really enjoyed.

One of the new characters introduced in this prequel, Gannicus is the ultimate gladiator and he’s just been promoted to the top position at Bataitus’ ludus. He’s interested in the pleasures life has to offer but he’s also fiercely loyal to best friend Oenomaus and his wife Melitta.

Manu Bennett’s Crixus

At first I was not a Crixus fan, but that was when he was trying to kill Andy Whitfield‘s Spartacus. After he fell for Naevia and befriended Spartacus, I changed my tune. I like this slimmed down version of Crixus. It’ll be nice to see him before he rules the ludus.

Let the drama begin.
