Love to Hate ‘Em: Billy Dewey from Southland

Maybe in this particular instance, this article should really be called Hate ‘Em. I am not now nor have I ever been a fan. He’s never treated Chickie with any respect and in “Punching Water” he almost comes to blows with Lydia. He’s a racist loudmouth and even though he spouts a lot of gibberish about tolerance and God, he has no real faith or belief. Ugh. He’s just gross. I do have to give it to C. Thomas Howell, though, for making me hate Dewey so much.

What, exactly, is Dewey’s problem? Why is he so hateful? Now, if I had more time I’d rewatch the episodes he’s in from the past two seasons. I don’t have that kind of time and I think it would just piss me off more. I think his problem is that he’s uphappy. I think he’s divorced (maybe? I’m not sure) and I get it. What woman in her right mind would put up with him? He doesn’t seem particularly interested in upholding the law, especially when he’s on a bender. He got sent to rehad for drunk driving in his patrol car and I seem to remember an incident at a celeb’s house that didn’t go over so well.

I do, however, think it’s important for Southland to show us every stripe of cop. We see the ones who want to make a difference, some are jaded some are still naive enough to care about everyone they come in contact with. We see the burnouts. They should find another career but they’ve been doing this too long to try anything else. Maybe they’re drunk on power or in Dewey’s case, just drunk. Even though he’s four months sober he’s drunk on the sound of his own voice. I can’t blame Cooper for ditching him at the 7 Eleven. I’m just surprised it didn’t happen sooner. I do hope Chickie doesn’t get saddled with him again. It’s enough to make a person want a transfer.

What’s in store for Dewey? I’d like to see him kicked off the force but not before creating a publicity nightmare for the LAPD and possibly taking a good cop down with him. That’s just good television. What would you like to see?
