Character Development: Detective Kevin Ryan, Castle “Nikki Heat”

Now you know I’m all about Beckett and Castle but I seriously have much love for the rest of the characters too. What was great about “Nikki Heat” is that Det. Ryan was a bigger part of the action. I loved that Hollywood babe Natalie Rhodes was on his freebie five list. The way he just went speechless in her presence was totally cute. But his character development came when he proposed to his girlfriend. All hour-long we saw how nervous he was. He asked Castle for advice. Castle, of course, wanted his friend to go big or go home. Thankfully, Beckett, the voice of reason in this case, advised him to go intimate. The big glitch happened when Det. Ryan lied to his girlfriend. He told her he had plans with Esposito while he went to her parents’ house to get permission to marry their daughter. Unfortunately, Jenny caught him in the lie and jumped to the conclusion that he was spending time with Natalie.

In the end, it all worked out and there was a sweet proposal at the precinct, in front of all Ryan’s friends. That moment managed to be intimate despite being in the middle of a police station. I know this is a TV show, but I had this big old smile on my face as he proposed. Loved that when he popped the question, he said her full name: “Jennifer Scout Duffy-O’Malley.” What was even better is that the actress who plays Jenny (Juliana Dever) is the real life wife of the guy who plays Detective Kevin Ryan, Seamus Dever. I loved him in “Nikki Heat.” I loved the romantic proposal. We hadn’t seen Jenny in a long, long time, so I was glad to see that they were still together and that their relationship had progressed. I guess she’ll soon be Jennifer Scout Duffy-O’Malley Ryan? Say that five times real fast.
