Moment of Goodness: Jane Goes Psychic to Try and Save His Friend on The Mentalist

“The Blood on his Hands” ended up being another stellar hour of The Mentalist primarily because it continued the Red John saga. Malcolm McDowell returned in this episode to portray the cult leader, Bret Stiles, who slightly bested Jane the last time they met. He was definitely a formidable adversary for Jane. We did not have to wait too long to find out what happened to Rebecca, Jane’s psychic best friend who disappeared in the Season Two finale after challenging Red John on television. I anticipated that she would reappear as potentially an accomplice of Red John or as his next victim. She ended up being his victim but she didn’t actually die. The Moment of Goodness was extremely heartbreaking; it came during the scene at the end of the episode where Jane was trying to revive the catatonic Rebecca. Jane decided to do a séance with the candle to speak to her from the dead. The problem is Rebecca’s alive but mentally she was so broken that she thought she was dead. As Jane talked to her and tried to convince her she is in fact alive, I was crying. It was so sad to see her end up this way. She completely lost touch with reality. Leslie Hope, who played Jack Bauer’s wife on 24, did a great job of portraying the tortured psychic. This is the second episode in a row where Jane has dealt with Red John’s presence. Will we finally find out Red John’s identity this season? Another stellar moment occurred between Jane and Stiles who seemed to know a lot of information about the Red John case. Is Stiles Red John? We certainly don’t know yet and I can’t wait to find out!!
