Moment of Goodness: Jane Confronts His Past on The Mentalist

After a rather so-so Season 3 premiere, the second episode rebounded big time. Whenever they focus on Jane’s past, it’s always the best. When they first brought his past up, Jane seemed almost ashamed to talk about it; but when he had to go back to his original carnival in “Cackle-Bladder Blood,” he seemed very comfortable with it. There was a great scene that Jane shared with his brother-in-law, Danny Ruskin, where Danny expressed his anger and frustration at Jane for getting his sister killed. Jane encouraged him to engage in forgiveness so that Danny could move on with his life. It was a poignant scene because you could also see that Jane still won’t forgive himself for getting his family killed because of his own arrogance. The final scene at the cemetery showed us that Jane is still filled with guilt. Simon Baker’s performance totally stands out whenever he is called to act this depth of emotion.
