Is This the End of Spartacus: Blood and Sand?

Andy Whitfield’s cancer has recurred and he’s had to drop out of the second season of the series. Starz isn’t sure if they’ll continue without Whitfield. The original occurrence of his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma forced Starz to alter the original schedule and film a prequel to bridge the two seasons. The new season would have premiered in Sept. 2011.

I really enjoyed Spartacus: Blood and Sand when it premiered on Starz earlier this year. At the time I didn’t have high hopes but I loved 300 so I thought I’d give it a chance. I ended up enjoying it immensely although I must admit what originally drew me to the series was Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. I wouldn’t call it great art or even a great drama but I did find it a highly watchable and imminently enjoyable soap. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that we see a lot of gleaming muscles every week – talk about a straight girl and gay guy’s dream. With each episode I found myself becoming more involved in this world and I was sad when the season ended. I wish Andy Whitfield a full and speedy recovery. If he is able to beat this cancer again, I’d love to see him return to this series. Either way, I’ll be thinking about him and wishing good things for him.
