We are so excited that this beloved show is getting another chapter. Yes, we’re those people who own season 1 through 3 on DVD and can randomly quote lines from the series back to you. Yes, we got insanely excited when we heard Netflix would be continuing the saga of this incredibly deluded and dysfunctional family. Series stars Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David, Cross, Portia de Rossi, Alia Shawkat and Jessica Walter discuss the return of the Bluths.

Q: Obviously over the years there was a lot of speculation as to what the next step with Arrested Development would be. Would there be a movie version? Could it come back to TV? So I’m curious, who in the cast was the last to believe Netflix when they said, “Yes, we’re actually doing this. It’s going to happen. And this is how it will happen.” And is there still a possibility for a movie when you’re done with original series on Netflix?

Portia de Rossi: “Well, I hope that there is still a possibility of a movie. I think we all would love to be a part of this crazy family for as long as we can be in any format that Mitch [Hurwitz] thinks is right for the show. I think we’re all on board for that. I think its a little boy who cried wolf for a while, I must admit. And really until Business Affairs called, that’s when I knew that we actually were going to do it — ’cause it was scheduling, it was oh it’s going to happen in this month or whatever and here’s a script or here’s an idea. But until Business Affairs got — until it got down to that I was a little skeptical. But having said that, I always knew that all of us would be on board and all of us would be willing to do whatever Mitch wanted us to do as part of the show.”

Jessica Walter: “I always believed it when wardrobe called.”

Portia: “That’s true, that’s true.”

Jessica: ”It’s true, it’s true because you could have a contract signed or whatever, but you know they’re putting down money because they’re going to go out and buy clothes.”

Q: What, if any inspiration did you folks take for your characters from the real Orange County to influence your characters?

Michael Cera: ”I drove up there one afternoon — it’s wild out there. Those are some strange folks. And I think it just trickled down just the oddness of that landscape. It’s just in the blood of the show.”

Portia: ”I just see Orange County as like a big shopping mall really full of blonde women who shop a lot.”

David Cross: ”Upper middle class skate punks bitching about stuff when they’re just bitching ’cause they’re 15, 16 years old and that’s what you do when you’re 15 and 16. But they’re so privileged. They’re skating around the mall, that big outdoor mall, with all kinds of money. Life sucks.”

Jessica: ”You know, I just got it that’s why everything is orange. I just got it. And they had orange carpet at the premiere and an orange curtain. Honestly, am I the only one who just got this?”

Portia: ”Well, no, it’s not just for Orange County, but it also for me represents prison, right?”

Jessica: ”Oh, right. Oh my God.”

Jason Bateman: ”And it was probably one of the colors not used that year for all the new shows.”

David: ”I thought the whole thing was about the Cincinnati Bengals. Close.”

Q: What did you miss about your characters? What was sort of delicious to jump back into and what was it like to jump back into these roles?

Jessica: ”Well, I miss the clothes. I miss the flowers. [My clothes are] from the original show. I borrowed it. And I just miss the juiciness of the writing. The writing was so character specific for all of us. They don’t have Arrested Development writer trees out there, so to come back to this writing was very exciting.”

Portia: ”Something will come to me. I mean I loved Lindsay. I loved playing her because she was so earnest even though she was vapid and self-centered. She actually thought that she was a good person and was doing good things. So I liked that kind of disconnect for a character. It’s always fun to play the innocent no matter what you’re doing, if you feel like you’re doing the right thing and you can get away with a lot comedically. So I definitely miss not having a conscience.”

Jason: ”I didn’t miss that much about the character because I don’t like to really work that hard so I made the character pretty close to me. Michael Bluth is pretty close to me so I never really left him. The clothes were different at my house versus the set. But I just like being with everybody again.”

Alia Shawkat: ”Yeah, I’d say the same. Just being with everyone. It’s fun to have scenes with different people, different characters. They’re like very different dynamics and it was always fun to see what weird things I was going to do with who next. You can quote me on that.”

David: “Yeah, just to repeat the sentiment. The ability to after seven years be able to work with this amazing cast with that amazing writing is so rare and such a privilege and it was very, very, very, very exciting and Tobias is a fun — it’s pretty goofy sadly diluted goofy guy and it’s a fun character to do for sure. But even less about that it was just like oh my God, I get to hang out with all these — we have so much fun. And we knew it was special from very, very, very early on and it was just a treat to be able to have that be your work, to work with all these folks with Mitch’s writing, you know.”

Michael: ”I’m still thinking actually.”

David: ”Can you say anything original that I haven’t said?”

Michael: ”No. I agree completely with everything. Yeah, I mean what David said. It’s the most fun job I’ve ever had and not to speak for Alia, but we were both really young and growing up doing the show so being around all these guys at that time was really formative for me and-”

David: ”Did you think Alia was gonna go, ‘That’s not true.’”

Michael: ”No, I know earlier you said you wish you had a different childhood. I don’t know that you meant that-”

Alia: ”You can’t change the past.”

Michael: ”Right, right. You keep saying that but — so it was just so nice to be around everyone again and have that experience again.”

Q: What is the most quoted line that’s been thrown at you like when fans run into on the street or events.

David: ”For me it’s 95% ‘Blew Yourself’ or some variation on that for sure. And it often happens – people will yell it from a car as the car’s moving so there’s a doppelgänger effect to it which makes it even more interesting.”

Alia: ”At my high school graduation I graduated from like a home school so it was like pregnant teens and like gang members mainly. But when I got up on the stage there were kids in the background, like five of them, and they all screamed, ‘Marry me’ very loudly. And, yeah. So I can’t escape it.”

Q: The show’s new format is very different from what it was when it was on TV. Do you think it’s going to be easy for the audience to digest the new format?

Jason: ”I don’t think it’ll be easy, no. But I hope that it’s appreciated by the few people that do love the show. They seem to be a group that likes things somewhat challenging by virtue of the fact they come back for Mitch’s dense writing all the time. It’s incredible. So the fact that Netflix affords him the opportunity to kind of have these stories go out over 15 different episodes that are so intertwined that the same scene will repeat from different angles in multiple episodes is a really unique thing and an exciting thing to be a part of, both just working with his complexity and also with Netflix’s distribution platform. It’s just kind of a neat time to watch TV.”

David: ”What I’m particularly excited about after watching those first two episodes, is if you’re watching it especially like in chronological order, I think as you get to episode three, episode four, you’re going to realize how you’re supposed to start watching as opposed to just being a passive viewer. And I think that’s going to be really, really exciting for people as they figure out, ‘Oh wait a minute’ you know, not to give too much away. It’s taking those moments that you had as a fan of Arrested especially when you watch it on DVD and go, ‘No, wait a minute. That’s a reference to that thing three shows earlier.’ But quintuple that and it’s going to be — I don’t even know what number that is.”

Jason: ”Quintuplify.”

David: ”But I think people are going to — it’s going to be a bit of an epiphany or revelation once you get into episode like say four, maybe even five, whatever it is you’re going to start realizing ‘Oh there’s a structure to this that I wasn’t aware of when I started watching. I was so excited. Yay, it’s back.’ And that’s gonna make everybody triple excited and there’s going to be a sense of discovery to it that is I think going to be really exciting and kind of redefine what TV can be.”

Q: Is there a preferred order that people should watch the show in because each episode centers on a different character? Do you have to go one through 15 or is there like a different kind of way to kind of mix it up?

Jason: ”He’s numbering them on purpose but that is not required to watch in that order, but as David said, pretty shortly after you start watching, you’ll realize that ‘Oh wait, I can complete that scene if I re-watch the second half of that last episode.’ And so you’ll start to make your own order as you’re interested in certain stories or start to kind of try to figure out what the whole thing is going to be about.”

David: ”I think It is important to watch I think your episodes one and two first ’cause of the story exposition.”

Portia: ”It’s kind of like it’s channeling your focus onto one character per episode. So in a way it’s almost easier to digest than the original series because we were following storylines A, B, C, D, E, and F. And now we’re just kind of following this one character. So in a way it’s kind of easier to watch and we’ve got a little bit more time to tell the story, as much time as we need. So you can kind of sit with the jokes a little bit more. We definitely saw that with Jason’s character because he has those amazing kind of moments that he just kind of sits and waits for all of us to make a fool of ourselves in some way. And it’s just really nice. It’s a nicer pace, I think.”

Q: You had every reason to have ultimate confidence that Mitch could recapture some of that lightning in the bottle. Can you talk about the moments that you knew, ‘We’re back doing Arrested Development.’ It felt like what it felt like before.

Portia:v“I mean you’ve talked about the scene in your suite how when we all go together for that one scene, the penthouse scene.”

Jessica: ”There are only I think two scenes in the entire 15 episodes where we were all nine of us together which actually we were in the premiere episode. But they had not cut yet to — the way they cut it they didn’t see Portia and David. The first time we all sat down in that penthouse which was recreated to the nails in the wall, we were so excited. It took about 30 minutes to calm down. Once we heard the voices and saw the faces that looked the same except for the kids who are now adults, that’s when I knew we were really back. I mean incredible. It was surreal.”

David: ”And a lot of the crew was — we were lucky enough to have a spillover of a lot of the crew that we worked with so that also lent itself to how surreal and cool it was for all of us to be looking at each other in outfits and getting to do this after seven years. And that’s when it really felt real, real.”

Q: Ten years after the first series you’re all presumably a lot older and wiser, has there been a massive shift or mellowing in the parent-child dynamic?

Portia: ”It’s called Arrested Development. We don’t really grow that much. Right?”

Jason: ”Things have actually gone the opposite direction.”

David: ”It’s a regression with folks. Yeah.”

Jason: ”If we’re ever fully rehabilitated they’ll be no show. So yeah, we’re deeply banged up when the seven years off has not been kind to any of us. And the fun is seeing everybody’s flaws.”

Jessica: ”The desperation is magnified I would say in the 15 episodes that we just did.”

Portia: ”Due to certain things like economy and whatnot.”

Jason: ”And just overall the whole tone is a lot darker. It’s not as homogenized as you need to kind of make things on broadcast. So, yeah, I felt it had a little bit more tooth.”

Portia: ”It feels very similar to the original series though to me.”

Jason: ”But there’s a little bit more of an edge I thought.”

Q: David, your performances as Tobias were renown for that physical dexterity. How limber do you feel nowadays?

David: ”Much like the fading athlete who perhaps should have quit the year before he just starts degrading. I was definitely attempting to do some fun stunts and my mind is the mind of a fresh virile 19 year-old. But I’m definitely getting creakier bones. But I’m not nearly as limber. Also I’m fatter. I was doing ADR and there’s a scene where I had my shirt off which was never a problem before. And I turn around, I’m like ‘Oh my God.’ Like it’s definitely like that middle age gut. I’m like ‘Oh, I didn’t even suck it in.’ I’m not quite as limber but I still, for my peers and my age group, oh dude, I’m top-notch.”

Q: Jason, you said you’re similar to your character in real life. Is that an observation you’ve made or your family and people around you?

Jason: ”The positive sides I’ve made. My family has observed the negative sides. Yeah, there’s a boring actor answer to this and I’ll spare you. But in brief, I try to perform my characters inside my skill set which means try to keep them close to me.”

Portia: ”But I will say that I think you’re hilarious as Michael in the stillness. But as Jason, you’re a lot funnier. I don’t think that came out-”

Jason: ”There’s a compliment in there and I will find it.”

Portia: ”You’re more jokey than the character is able to be because he’s a clown.”

Jessica: ”I’ve said this before that without Jason at the center and the satellite of [this] dysfunctional crazy family around him, I don’t think it would have worked. I don’t think The Mary Tyler Moore Show would have worked without her and her skills as Jason has the skills to be in the middle of the crazy people. I think that really without him — I know he hates to hear this, but it’s true. I don’t think it would have worked. I really don’t.”

Jason: ”It’s the smart structure that Mitch organized to put a proxy for all of us that watch the show as sort of, in the center sort of like a tour guide so he could take bigger swings with really funny characters.”

David: ”It was originally not supposed to be cast as Jason. It was originally Mary Tyler Moore in the Michael role.”

Jason: ”Not a lot of people know that.”

Q: Do you each have a memory from the first three seasons that you could share that has kind of popped back into your head now that this season is happening?

Jason:“I’ve said this before so I apologize for anyone, including you guys, who have heard this before. But Jeffrey Tambor was the first person with any dialogue on the first day of shooting of the pilot. And it was the scene on the boat where he’s getting an award and he says — he has like this monologue, this acceptance speech, this award. And we as a family are all assembled there and are watching. So we as actors were also sitting there watching this actor that we all love and respect and we’re lucky to work with and watch him do his take on this character. Because I don’t think we had a table read or if we did I don’t remember. Anyway, to watch him play his character was so informative to me about what the tone of the show was going to be. There’s no winking and it’s deadly serious. And that was a whole different kind of comedy for me at least to play because I was coming from multi-camera work, sitcoms. So that was a very clear memory that fortunately I held onto because it established a tone of comedy for the show that I tried to hold onto and to follow.”

Q: Did any of you accept this with a certain degree of trepidation to kind of go back to something you left behind seven years ago?

Portia: ”I feel like as actors all we really want is great material and great characters and a great cast to play with. And we have that here. We have all of that. So I think all of us, because I like to speak for everybody, we’re just really thrilled. It just felt like a gift that we got to go back and resurrect something that we all really loved, that an audience is anticipated and excited about. We know that people like what we do and we get to work with Mitch and brilliant writers and wear great clothes.”

Q: Jason, the show and specifically your character has a sort of dry, very underplayed sense of humor, which is kind of the trait of a lot of British comedies. I was wondering how much of an influence your English mum was on shaping your humor and did she introduce you to British comedy?

Jason: “Yes, very much so. There was a lot of Monty Python around the house and there was some Benny Hill, although that’s a little bit broader than my sensibility but it was there nonetheless. And there’s obviously a lot more silly stuff in that than we have in this show, but there’s also the very underplayed stuff that you’ve got to kind of really lean in to recognize whether it’s funny or not. And so yes, that reactionary comedy or dry or sarcasm or basically protagonist type of stuff, I really, really like. So I was lucky to find this part.”

Q: What, if anything, do you feel Arrested Development is a commentary on in our society?

Jason: ”I think generally is basically says we’re all idiots. I mean nobody’s perfect and this is just sort of an exaggerated version of that, told in a comedic style and tone that you either love or you hate. And I think that’s one of its strengths is that it’s very specific and it makes a choice and we’re lucky that there are enough people out there that like what we do that gives us a chance to do more for them and for us, frankly. I think we all really like the show and want to watch it as fans.”

Portia: ”I think we’re greedy as a culture as well. I think it kind of just highlights the fact that this society has become a little bit self-obsessed, greedy, and I don’t know. It seems to be tipping off its axis a little bit. And I think that a family, I mean the fact that we have this housing development, the McMansions, kind of plays to our consumerism as a culture.”

David: “There’s something that you tend to, as a viewer, you tend to forget about, which is that this family that we’re watching is shot in a documentary style. And now there are many more shows on how many more cable networks that are reality — that don’t feel like reality did 20 years ago when reality TV started. And now it’s just a thing that we forget about because people on these reality shows don’t act like there’s a camera there. But of course there’s a camera there. And the idea of what’s real and what’s fiction is blurred because so many of these people are phony and shallow in their own right when you watch any of the Real Housewives or any of those type of shows, they’re all performing, even though they’re real people. And in Arrested Development there are cameras there and I think we even did an episode where you see a boom. We did that on purpose to remind you that this is documentary style and now even more so in 2013. I think that’s the landscape of half of our TV and we just forget what’s real and what’s performing for the camera kind of thing.”

All 15 episodes of Arrested Development will be available on Netflix at 12 am PT/3 am ET on Sunday, May 26th.

I’m glad they’re back. Rookie Blue is one of my summer guilty pleasure shows, and even though it went surprisingly dark (the upside is Noam Jenkins is everywhere now), it still has a fairly easygoing vibe that most of the U.S. procedurals don’t.

Here’s a sneak peek of the premiere, “Surprises,” which airs at 10/9c tonight on ABC, and a longer behind-the-scenes look at what to expect this season (SPOILERS!):

We’ve been Anne Heche fans since she started in this business. She’s had a long and varied career and you can see and feel the passion she has for this character and this series. TV Goodness participated in a Save Me press call. Anne talks about what to expect on the show this season as what it’s been like to play a woman who talks to God. Q: Can you describe Beth in three words? Anne Heche: “Enthusiastic, goofy and loving.” Q: You started your career with drama, but more recently the roles you’ve taken, like this and Hung, are comedy. Is that because it’s a better schedule for a mom or is there another reason that you want to do comedy now? Anne: “You know what? Nobody saw my bad soap acting. I think a lot of people laughed at that when I was 17. But I think I’ve always been drawn to making people giggle. I’ve been lucky because I’ve been able to do so many different things in so many different mediums, you know? And I guess when I went to Broadway with Alec Baldwin – I did “20th Century” – I just fell in love with [...]

Nobody saw my bad soap acting. I think a lot of people laughed at that when I was 17. But I think I’ve always been drawn to making people giggle. I’ve been lucky because I’ve been able to do so many different things in so many different mediums, you know? And I guess when I went to Broadway with Alec Baldwin – I did “20th Century” – I just fell in love with physical comedy. You cannot get more pleasure, I don’t think, then throwing yourself up against a wall and listening to an audience just cackle with laughter. And I guess I kind of set out to make more of those opportunities happen for myself, for sure. And Save Me has fallen into that desire to make people giggle. I do like the schedule though, that’s for sure. But it’s not necessarily about schedule, it’s just that the joy of my life kind of , it’s funnier probably for people to hang out with me when I’m making them laugh than when I’m making them cry. I wanted to go to Parsons School of Design. I never thought in a million years that anybody would continue to hire me as an actress. And when I was getting ready to go I paid my first tuition and everything and then I got a call asking if I wanted to go and audition for O Pioneers!, a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. And I got it and then was like, ‘Well’ – and this is so funny because it does dovetail kind of perfectly into Save Me, because I thought, ‘I must be getting a message from God. I must be – I mean come on. Somebody’s hiring me to go work with Jessica Lange? We look for signs, we look for messages. Sometimes it comes in a book, sometimes it comes in the stars, and we try to figure out how to make our lives work. She’s not a great mom, she’s not a great wife, she drinks too much, she plays too hard, and she hasn’t really been responsible. And I love that because I’ve been so blessed with many chances in my life that I get really excited by being able to play women that get to do it all again, you know? I think that we do come to points in our life where we need something to believe in. And whether or not we believe – or wherever we get our strength from, I think we have so much courage, everybody, to walk through this life and try to make it right. And that’s really all Beth is trying to do. She wants to do it right and she wants to make people happy along the way. And I like that. She’s a really positive person. And this message, this connection that she has with God has filled her with the joy of life. And she wants to give it to everybody like a gift. And sometimes when you have that big of a gift, sometimes people don’t want it. So it doesn’t always work out perfectly for her, but she is really trying to figure it out in a positive way. And I love all that about her. And she’s a goofball. She’s a total goofball, and so am I.”

Before Beth gets filled with God she’s kind of a slob and a drunk and everything. So in the pilot, for the first time she decides to get herself together and go out and start running. And I remember thinking, ‘I wonder how God feels in your body? What would it feel like if all of a sudden God started walking around in your body?’ So I went into Hancock Park, which is where I live in Los Angeles, and I went to a gorgeous street that kind of looked like Cincinnati. And I remember putting on earphones and I looked all around and was really hoping that nobody was watching me, and I started acting – I started feeling what it would feel like. Like, ‘What would it feel like if all of a sudden I was just filled with God?’ And so I started running down the street and I was jumping and doing jumping jacks and shaking my leg and doing all of this goofy stuff. And I looked over and there was like two dogs and two people with their heads tilted like, ‘What is in that girl? What is that about?’ And I realized that I had figured it out, that this character needs to be filled in her body all the time. And so my work kind of started there. Just, ‘What does it feel like to feel that good? What would it feel like if I knew that I was going to be okay?’ Which is really what I feel like God is to Beth, an answer that everything’s going to be okay for her, that she’s going to make it, she’s going to live, she’s going to reconnect with her daughter, she’s going to reconnect with her husband, her friends, everything’s going to be okay. She believes that she has to do something and her family says, ‘You know what, if you’re going to go this far, like this is it. This is enough. I’m leaving. You cannot be this person. I’m leaving you.’ And even in the rejection of her family she believes in God, she believes God is telling her something to do. And I will tell you, I got down on my knees. This path of – which is the hilarity about Beth – the path that she goes on leads her to a place where she ends up in the mud eating the dirt off the ground and shoving it in her face in front of television cameras to prove something to her friends. And after I did it they yelled cut and it was so disgusting. Actually, my son was there watching because I knew that he just loves when I make a fool out of myself. So he was there just barfing. He’s like, ‘Oh no you did not do that.’ And I looked and the director said, ‘You know what Anne, you will just – you will do anything to make people laugh won’t you?’ And that was a thing, that’s kind of what I’ve learned; that I will eat mud. And I think everybody has. I think everybody talks to God sometimes. I think everybody tries to figure God out. I think we all would love to have a helping hand. I think we would all like to trust that we’re being taken care of, that life means something. And this is a story about a woman who’s dealing with that every single moment of her life, and wanting the best for everybody and wanting to use that experience of God to help people. So I hope that people feel like God’s out there helping them out, that we’re here for each other because that’s all we’ve got. I feel like we haven’t even begun to tap into what Beth’s life is and what will happen to her with this extraordinary thing that she has going on in her life. Because of the subject matter, because Beth talks to God, it’s just is kind of endless. I think Darlene Hunt and I are – we’ve just done 6 – 7 episodes really. So we just think that the possibilities are endless. I can’t imagine getting tired of what that journey is because the show is like starting at the beginning of somebody’s life, but as an adult. So it would be really hard for that not to be fresh, to me. But, talk to me in seven years. I can’t wait. I mean please, I hope we’re having this conversation and I’m like, ‘I’m so bored with her. See Beth finds God, right, or God finds Beth as she’s about to die. But we keep going back in time and seeing what we call Bad Beth. So the Bad Beth stuff that I get to do is so outrageous because I am always playing a plastered drunk, usually most of the time, and making an absolute ass out of myself. The hilarious thing about Beth is that she makes an ass out of herself in the past and she makes an equal ass out of herself in the present. So what’s really funny is that she’s been saved, except she’s still has no idea what to do with the information that God is giving her so she becomes an absolute fool. Her enthusiasm and her trust in God makes her an utter fool, equal to the amount to the Bad Beth that she was, so she confuses people the same in her present life as she did in her past. So I get to do some really funny, ridiculous stuff. But Beth does get to meet God. The day that Beth met God in the show was one of the most amazing moments for me shooting. I could not believe it happened. And the person playing God was somebody that I had wanted to meet. And I literally begged this person to do it. I wanted this to happen so badly, and it did, and I cannot tell you who it is, but I was so thrilled. And everybody on the set was so thrilled. It was a very, very magical moment, the day I met God.”

Here’s my top 5 moments from last night’s season one finale: Mills and Dawson Split Well, it’s about freaking time that these two are finally honest with each other. Ever since Mills (Charlie Barnett) and Dawson (Monica Raymund) hooked up, it was cute for a while but in the end, they just looked “awkward”. We all knew the whole time that they were together, Dawson was pining for Casey (Jesse Spencer) and was only in the relationship because the man she really wanted was with someone else.
Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect in the season finale of Chicago Fire (especially after the very disappointing finale of another show that aired at the same time last night, cough, cough). The obvious thought is that there would be some massive accident, and one of our beloved characters would be seriously hurt. After all, it is a fire and rescue series. But, the writers surpassed any of my wildest dreams. That ending was a humdinger, one that I bet the viewers are still talking about.

Here’s my top 5 moments from last night’s season one finale:

Mills and Dawson Split

Well, it’s about freaking time that these two are finally honest with each other.

So, I was actually glad last week when Mills dumped Dawson over keeping the information about his father from him. And, I was so afraid tonight that they would get back together after Dawson formally apologized. Fortunately, that didn’t happen, and she told Mills the raw truth, even if it meant the end of their relationship for good:

I know what you need to hear, and I can’t give you that – Dawson to Mills

Yay, for honesty for once!

Dawson and Casey Moment

I knew Casey was hurting after Hallie’s death, but damn, I don’t think any of us had any idea how bad it was. After all, at work, Casey appeared completely normal. The main storyline in the finale involved a fire at a maximum-security prison. The fire ended up leading to a hostage situation, and Casey was a rock. He kept a level head, thought quickly, and ultimately led his team to safety.

But at the end of episode, that’s when the façade came in and we see the broken man Casey has become. His house is a wreck, he’s been living on fast food – obviously, he’s suffering from some major depression and desperately needs some help.

But, Dawson shows up and is there for him. They only share a hug, but we all know that some really good things are heading for these two characters next season.

Mouch Gets A Girlfriend

When Mouch first mentioned he had met a Japanese woman on the Internet, the first thing that popped into my mind was an Asian prostitute. After all, the internet is filled with scams to get lonely men to pay big money for a pretty Asian girl only to kind out she’s a sleazy prostitute.

So, it’s no real surprise that Otis (Yuri Sardarov) thought the same thing when Mouch (Christian Stolte) announced his Internet lady was coming to visit him. The guy was just so, so cute waiting there anxiously with a dozen roses. To our surprise, the lady that arrived wasn’t some teenage hooker, but what appeared to be a nice woman. That’s two points for Mouch – so happy the guy finally found somebody because he deserves it.

It’s A Boy For Herrmann

While the team is locked down at the prison, Hermann’s (David Eigenberg) wife, Cindy, goes into labor, and initially, it doesn’t look good. The baby goes into distress and they have to do an emergency C section, while Herrmann is racing to the hospital to be at his wife’s side.

When he gets there, the poor guy is freaking out because he thinks his newborn baby is dead. But, when the baby finally emerges from Cindy’s arms, the proudest Daddy face appears on Herrmann’s face. Even with 4 other children running and screaming around the hospital room, Herrmann just holds his new son in his arms, completely oblivious to everything else in the world. Very, very touching moment.

WTF, Who Is Pregnant?!

Most of the finale is centered on women who are either trying to have a baby or who are actually having a baby. Herrmann is the proud Papa of a new baby boy, and Shay (Lauren German) is desperately trying to get pregnant, only to find out that the first try did not take.

But, who shows up pregnant at the very end of the finale blew my mind away. We all probably remember Renee Royce (Sarah Shahi). She was the hot lawyer that had a very brief, but very intense, fling with Severide (Taylor Kinney) in the middle of the season. She ended up taking a new job in Spain, and honestly, I never thought we would hear from her again (this is especially true since the actress has been made a series regular on the hit CBS drama Person of Interest).

Well, Renee is back! And, yes she is very pregnant, presumably with Severide’s baby. With Shay trying to get pregnant and her and Severide being so close, this should make for a very bumpy ride in Season 2.

Chicago Fire returns this Fall for Season 2 on NBC.

This was an exciting season finale, in more ways than one. A lot happened but I want to focus on Juliette in this episode. I’ve never made a secret of how much I love Hayden Panettiere in this role. There are moments when her spoiled, self-righteous behavior gets on my nerves. But there are also times when her willingness to love and learn make me want to understand her and give her as many more chances as she needs to become a better person. In “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive,” we see some of the people Juliette’s mistreated along the way come back into her life and offer what she needs the most – their love. Her ex-manager Glenn shows up when we least expect it. Deacon tries to be there for Juliette, although she pushes him away at first. Avery is there when she needs a friend (he’s making strides, but he’s still not fully redeemed. I’m not sure he ever can be for me). Even Rayna is there for Juliette.

Juliette is a master at pushing people away with one arm and pulling them back in close with the other. Even though Juliette’s relationship with her mother could be described as difficult – and that’s on a good day – there were moments where they really seemed to connect. Juliette wasn’t shy about blaming her mother for Dante’s presence in her life to begin with (as well as a host of other things). When we met him in “Dear Brother,” I really thought Dante was going to be good for Juliette and he was at first. He didn’t put up with her crap and he was helping Jolene. But as soon as their relationship got physical, things went downhill. I feel like that’s the case almost 100% of the time – as soon as Juliette has sex with someone, it’s an invitation for trouble.

Jolene obviously took Juliette’s constant berating to heart. I’m not blaming Juliette for Jolene’s death – that’s on Jolene. Her mother was an addict. I’m not saying that would’ve killed her in the end, but it certainly wasn’t good for her chances. Jolene saw an opportunity to shield her daughter from the terrible embarrassment and ridicule that the sex tape would have brought down on Juliette. Maybe Jolene felt she owed this to Juliette now because she could never really be there for her daughter when she was younger. Maybe Jolene thought this sacrifice would somehow redeem her in Juliette’s eyes. Whatever her justification, it wasn’t a good enough reason to abandon her daughter forever. Juliette still needed her mom, even after (or maybe because of) everything they’d been through. She still needed that human connection, that love to feel worthy in this world.

I thought Jolene’s death would send Juliette over the edge and that did seem to be where she was going. But Glenn managed to pull her back, after Juliette claimed she should be celebrating that it was finally over. And of course she didn’t mean it. Of course she didn’t want that. I’m glad in that moment Juliette was able to take a step back and realize what she was doing to herself. I’m also glad she was willing to let a very small group of people into her grieving process. If this has taught her nothing else, hopefully she at least knows she is loved. I might have cried when she dedicated that song to her mother at the Bluebird. What a fitting tribute.

I can’t wait to see what Juliette gets up to next season. I think she’ll find that love she’s looking for eventually, but until then I kind of like it when she’s causing trouble.

Season 2 of Nashville returns in the fall.

Poor Nick. I had a feeling he’d be the one in the most danger at the end of the Grimm season two finale. And he was.

But before we get to the cliff-hanger, let’s talk about the entire episode, the highly entertaining “Goodnight, Sweet Grimm.” I felt like the hour zoomed by as Nick and the cops had to deal with the victims of Baron Samedi aka the “Cracher-Mortel.”

Not as much happened with Adalind as I had hoped. But at least we know that plans are in motion to help pave the way for her to get her hexenbiest powers back. And I’m glad that Frau Pech has been dealt with. In season three, I hope this baby story moves a little more quickly. I”m loving Claire Coffee as Adalind so I definitely want to see more of her. You can tell she’s just relishing playing such a villainous character.

James Frain is so incredibly creepy as Renard’s royal (but not loyal) half-brother. Every word Eric Renard utters drips with sarcasm and betrayal. It’s pretty awesome. How many times did he call Sean “brother or bro” in this episode? Not a single time did it seem sincere. And setting up his henchman to be another one of Baron Samedi’s victims was so damn cold. And awesome. Grimm has conjured up some really fun villains.

One of my favorite scenes was the “dinner date” between Sean and Eric. I love how neither of them trusts the other for a split second. Our Renard wouldn’t even take a sip of the wine or eat any of the squab that was served. I don’t blame him one bit.

Couple Talk: Monroe and Rosalee were adorably awkward as they had dinner. I hope they have more togetherness time before anything comes along to split them up. Nick and Juliette were also suitably awkward as they had to navigate this new world where Juliette knows about Nick’s grimm-ness and he can come home from work and actually tell her the truth. It was pretty cute. Juliette asked Nick to move back in, which means that’s not going to happen anytime soon. As we know from how things ended. I’m so OK with that.

Hank was a non-factor, unfortunately. I’m guessing it’s because of Russell Hornsby’s achilles tendon injury that went down in real life (and had to be written into the show — hence the crutches). Hank said he had to go get the cast off and then we didn’t see him again. When Grimm returns for season three, Hank (and Russell) should be nicely healed and ready to be part of the action again. I’m looking forward to that.

Now onto Nick. It was very fortuitous of him to ask Rosalee to hide the key. Because he became a victim of the Cracher-Mortel. Baron Samedi did his job and used that deadly cracher of his (which in Creole, means “spit”). Nick is wrapped up all neat and tidy for Eric — he’s got some forged papers and they seem to be packing him up and sending him who knows where. Quelle cliff-hanger!

Random Thoughts Ramble: I love how Rosalee has become the expert with all things Wesen. She’s a trusty weapon for Nick and Monroe to have on their side. Have you ever gotten the sense that Wu knows exactly what’s going on? Maybe not with Nick but with Wesens and all that jazz? I just think the matter-of-fact way he deals with the crazy cases he sees on a daily basis is hilarious. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s putting two and two together. At some point he has to wonder what’s going on in Portland. Baron-Samedi’s evil laugh was appropriately creepy and campy and so great and was a nice touch as Nick chased him down but couldn’t quite catch up to him. I liked that Juliette made sure she included herself in on tracking down the Baron’s walking dead. This summer is going to be a bit painful because I can’t wait to find out about Nick’s fate.

And finally, I just want to give major kudos to David Giuntoli. I think he’s done a fantastic job tackling everything that Nick’s been through this season. I’m totally impressed and I’m excited to see what he’s going to do when Grimm returns this fall when it’s back on Friday nights on NBC. Until then, “Goodnight, Sweet Grimm.”

Here’s another show that’s piqued my interest big time. I hate that I’m going to have to wait until late fall for it to touch down on TV. However, something tells me it’ll be worth the wait. Show: Almost Human Network: FOX The Concept: Almost Human is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop is forced to pair with a part-human robot as they fight crime and investigate a deeper cover-up in a futuristic new world. Why am I going to watch? Aside from the sci-fi angle and the sort of Fringe-esque vibe I got from the trailer, I can name three reasons: 1. It’s under the J.J. Abrams umbrella.
Here’s another show that’s piqued my interest big time. I hate that I’m going to have to wait until late fall for it to touch down on TV. However, something tells me it’ll be worth the wait.

Show: Almost Human
Network: FOX
The Concept: Almost Human is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop is forced to pair with a part-human robot as they fight crime and investigate a deeper cover-up in a futuristic new world.

Why am I going to watch? Aside from the sci-fi angle and the sort of Fringe-esque vibe I got from the trailer, I can name three reasons:

1. It’s under the J.J. Abrams umbrella. The man has a great track record on TV and in movies. If his name is attached, I’m almost always there (I tried, Undercovers). Plus, the show’s creator/executive producer is J.H. Wyman — and if you watched Fringe, then you know who this guy is. So excited to see what he has in store for us.

2. The presence of Michael Ealy. He’s just come off of USA Network’s Common Law, which was an OK show, but definitely wasn’t what you’d call a keeper. USA canceled it after the first season. So happy to know Ealy’s going to be a part of the action on a J.J series. Once again, he’s playing a cop, but this time he’s a robot that exhibits some human tendencies. Almost Human seems dark and intense and I think he (and those beautiful eyes of his) will thrive in such an atmosphere. Did I mention I tend to get a little shallow when I watch TV? Speaking of which…

3. Karl Urban on the small screen. I recently hit the theater to see Star Trek Into Darkness and there he reprised his role as Bones for the new generation. I don’t know Urban from anything other than the Star Trek flicks and Red. Apparently, he was in several episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess. I had no idea. Anyway, Karl Urban is awesome. He’s so incredibly sexy. He’s a good actor. And I’m excited to see his part-machine human cop pair up with Ealy’s part-human robot cop. A little confusing. But who cares? It already seems like the chemistry between these two actors is there.

Rounding out the cast is the always amazing Lili Taylor, Friday Night Lights star (and former Charlie’s Angel) Minka Kelly, plus Michael Irby (The Unit) and Mackenzie Crook (Game of Thrones).

Look for Almost Human to debut on FOX in late fall.

I don’t know about the rest of the viewers, but I am finding a good deal of the season finales this year to be pretty lame. Most of the network’s finales aired last week, and so, by last Friday, I felt like I had gone through a cheese and cliché fest. Fortunately, I am very happy to report that last night’s finale of Bates Motel didn’t keep this network pattern. It was well-written, entertaining, and chock-full of OMG scenes and quotes, as always.

Here’s my top 5 moments of last night’s season one finale:

Norma’s Confession

At the beginning of the episode, Norma (Vera Farmiga) stops in to see her therapist, and one of the first questions he asks her is about her parents. I swear she made them sound like Mr. And Mrs. Cleaver, with her father being the “kindest person you’ll ever know” and her mother working at a bakery.

I knew that was probably all bullsh*t, but not how badly until she broke down and told Norman (Freddie Highmore) the truth. The reality is her own brother raped her for years, and she was too afraid to say anything because her father was a mean son of a bitch. Lord, what a confession to unload on your son right before he goes on a date to the school dance!

Norma Learns to Shoot

With Norma having to meet Mr. Abernathy (Jere Burns) in less than 12 hours to give him $150,000 that she didn’t have, she decides it’s about time she learn how to handle a gun. So, she turns to her son, Dylan (Max Thieriot), because carrying a gun seems to be in job description these days. I absolutely love how close Norma and Dylan are becoming. I know Dylan will never be her precious Norman, but at least she is now acknowledging him as her son, and vice versa.

You called me ‘Mom’ – Norma to Dylan

Well, you have a loaded gun in your hand, Norma – Dylan

Emma and Norman On a Date

Poor, poor Emma. The girl has a lung disease, has never been to a school dance, and just wants to go one time. And, with Norman being at least a half-decent guy, he agrees to be her date.

However, his decency ends as soon as they get there. Emma is so pretty in her new dress, but she doesn’t even get a second look from Norman because he’s too busy gawking at Bradley. This gawking ultimately lands Norman a punch in the face by Bradley’s boyfriend and all alone at the dance, having to walk home by himself. Serves you right, Norman.

Good Sheriff Romero

I don’t know about everyone else, but until last night, I haven’t been sure about this guy. Sure, he’s the Sheriff of White Pine Bay, but Zack Shelby (Mike Vogel) was also the Deputy, and we know how that turned out. But, when Sheriff Romero (Nester Carbonell) meets Abernathy in Norma’s place, we finally find out which side this guy is on.

Initially, he plays Abernathy, making him think he’s there to step up to replace Zack Shelby and Keith Summers. Then, as soon as Abernathy gets comfortable, he unloads a barrel into his chest and dumps his body (along with all of the money) into the harbor.

Not in my town, you piece of shit – Sheriff Romero

Very happy to see that we have at least one guy now playing for the good team in this crazy town.

The Shocking Death

We all knew that there was going to be at least one death in last night’s finale. After all, it had been talked up on Twitter for days. The only real question was who? My money had actually been on Bradley. She had infuriated Norman many, many times, and we know what happens when Norman gets pissed and pushed over the edge.

Of course, killing off Bradley would have been too obvious and so, someone else had to go. Over the latter part of the season, we’ve watched Miss Watson take an interest in Norman, helping him with his writing and getting one of his pieces published. But, the relationship seemed a bit off, almost like Miss Watson wanted to give Norman lessons on more things than just writing.

Last night, she goes a little too far by picking up Norman in the rain and taking him to her place. With Norman sitting on the sofa and Miss Watson undressing in the bedroom, the image of Norma appears, tells Norman how very wrong this is, and then, orders Norman “to just do it”. Apparently, “just do it” means Norman slitting Miss Watson’s throat because the next scene is Norman arriving back home into the arms of his mother.

All in all, I really enjoyed the finale and can’t wait for next season. With the death of Jake Abernathy, the whole Asian sex slave arc is wrapped up nicely (or so we are led to believe), thus leaving Season 2 open to all new storylines.

[WARNING: SPOILERS FOR TONIGHT'S FINALE]

Another Grimm season finale? Time flies when you’re scared…and having fun watching all the Wesens of the Week.

NBC Synopsis for “Goodnight, Sweet Grimm”: THE ROYALS BRING THEIR AGENDA FOR NICK TO PORTLAND – JAMES FRAIN AND SHOHREH AGHDASHLOO GUEST STAR — Just when things look like they’re back to normal with Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), Nick (David Giuntoli) is called to investigate a flurry of rage-fueled assaults happening all over Portland. He goes to Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) for help battling Portland’s newest wave of “undead.” As if that weren’t enough, Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) informs Nick that his brother Eric (guest star James Frain) is in town on family business. Meanwhile, Stefania (guest star Shohreh Aghdashloo) and Frau Pech methodically use their alliances with Adalind (Claire Coffee) to battle one another. Russell Hornsby and Reggie Lee also star.

I’m not going to lie. I’m not ready for this to be it. Season 2 has been quite enjoyable. What’s been your favorite part? For me, it’s the fact that we’ve been able to see Hank be even more part of the action now that he knows about Nick’s Grimm-ness. It’s been Nick finding out about Renard’s royal ties and the fact that his boss knew all about him, too. They’ve been forced to work together on cases of the Wesen variety. You know that Renard and Nick don’t really trust each other but they also have to be glad that they don’t have to hide anymore, right? Although, there are a still a ton of mysteries they’re keeping from each other. And I’m totally cool with that. I love Rosalee and Monroe and how integral they are to the cases Nick investigates. They’re both rock solid support as well as such a cute couple. I can’t get enough of those two.

TV Goodness was able to take part in a recent press call where the actress who plays Rosalee Calvert — Bree Turner — answered questions about the finale, an episode where her character “gets more physically involved in what we’re dealing with…” What else does she have to say about the season ender?

What was your reaction when you first saw the script for the finale?

BREE TURNER: Well, seeing the finale script, it was just truly – I don’t know what more they could have put in this script. I mean everyone – every story line gets blown out and exposed, resolved, challenged. And then just the level of production value in this finale. It’s like feature film-quality stuff that we did in terms of effects and story and set and environment. It was all just really at the top of our game, I felt. We were all kind of chomping at the bit to start production on this last one.

We heard there might be a major casualty. Can you talk a bit more about that and a bit more about the finale?

BREE: Can I tell you specifics? No. But…someone’s life is definitely in balance and it’s very, very, very scary to be this person, I will say. And I honestly don’t know how we’re going to resolve it in terms of storyline. I’m nervous and excited about how season 3 is going to begin with this cliffhanger because it’s pretty major.

Is there strife ahead for Rosalee and Monroe?

BREE: It’s Grimm, you know. People don’t stay happy very long on this show. And the Rosalee/Monroe romance has been moving in such a beautiful – it’s had such a beautiful journey this season that, I mean, let’s be real. Only complications are coming.

Favorite storyline this year?

BREE: I think it’s the romance (Rosalee/Monroe) this year. It”s been really fun and it’s been so sweet and it’s so enjoyable working with Silas [Weir Mitchell, Monroe] that I think that the payoff the fans will receive [tonight] will be well worth the wait.

In the future, what would you like to see Rosalee’s role be in the group?

BREE: You’ll see [in the finale], I become much more the authority in the issue at hand. And I really like that choice like of just…there’s no more bumbling through this now. Now I am — I feel — one of the most powerful apothecaries in the Wesen community. I feel like I’m the one that – I’m such a research nerd and I think that was exposed [in] the “Endangered” episode, when I knew everything about the Wesen/our alien creatures [the Gluhenvolk] – that I knew everything about who they were. I think I just love research and history and books. And I think I know a little bit about everything honestly. And I think that would be fun to just sort of have kind of complete total world domination in terms of that…in terms of my skill set. I think I am becoming very powerful that way.

Will being this voice of authority get [Rosalee] in trouble in the finale?

BREE: Yes. You know, it’s a lot of pressure. And I think everyone sort of is starting to look to me for the answers and I only can do what I can do, you know. So I think, yes, it does get me into trouble with what we’re dealing with.

The Grimm season 2 finale, “Goodnight, Sweet Grimm” airs tonight at 10/9c on NBC.
