Previewing A Discovery of Witches: Episode 4

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

A Discovery of Witches

Diana walks into a sea of awkward Sunday night on A Discovery of Witches
when Matthew escorts her to his family home (okay, castle) in France, where his mother, Ysabeau (Lindsay Duncan) has an excellent reason to be wary of her new house guest.

A Discovery of Witches

Matthew partially clues Diana in on the Ysabeau’s very sound rationale. Although she’s ostensibly there to rest and regroup, she’s curious enough that over the course of the episode, she fills in the the rest of the blanks for herself.

Emboldened by the presumably safe space, Diana also challenges Matthew and his family more than she probably should. In the process, she wears down Ysabeau a bit, and gains the favor of Marthe (Sorcha Cusack), who’s run the De Clermont household for centuries.

In Venice, Satu is getting her own deep dive into the world of the Congregation and we get a little more information on why the brewing new relationship is making them so twitchy. In Oxford, Juliette receives a chilly reception, and a disturbance at the lab and shenanigans in Venice force Matthew to take his leave and return to Marcus and Miriam.

A Discovery of Witches

The full spectrum of happiness and heartache play out for Diana in two really stunning scenes that reveal the next evolution of her abilities. It’s another terrific episode, directed by Alice Troughton and written by Kate Brooke and Tom Farrelly.
